How far is it from Berkeley Amtrak to UC Berkeley?

Work for amtrak or go to Berkeley?

  • I'm well on my way to getting accepted into the Haas program at UC Berkeley, but a family member said that he could get me a job at Amtrak as an assistant conductor and within a few years ill be making around $60,000 a yr. I dont know what to do because I dont know if ill be guaranteed once i graduate with this recession. People with knowledge regarding the employment rate or graduates would be good candidates to answer this question. Thanks.

It just comes down to whether you want short term or long term financial satisfaction. Amtrak is the short term solution that will give you a modest income. You didn't say where the $60k job is located. If it's in the Bay Area then that's a horrible long term deal. If you think $60k is a good long term wage for you then it might be fine. Haas will give you an MBA and allow you to make much more than $60k in the long run. It would give you more options in life. An MBA is very transferable to different companies and industries. Working for Amtrak would be putting yourself in a box making it hard to transfer your skills to another job if you find you don't like it. The economy will turn around and if you have the financial and intellectual abilities to hit a recovering economy running then I say go for it.

I tend to agree with your previous posters. The job with Amtrak would be a good sort of guarantee and just about no one has a guarantee for a job these days. Plus, working for a big company has some good benefits beyond the ones you think of originally. If it turns out that you don't enjoy conducting there are lots of opportunities to move into other positions within the company. You can basically change jobs without losing your seniority or things like vacations and sick time.

If you go to UC Berkeley then you should be able to get a job when you get out and you will have an education. Which prospect are you more excited about? Do you think there is a possibility you will be miserable in that job and will regret having been so short-sighted? I don't agree with another one of the answerers about not looking to the future by going to school. That is exactly what you would be doing by going to school: thinking long-term. And, you will be more likely to do want you want when you graduate.

NONAME

Amtrak would be my choice. You can always study via computer. To many young people fail to look to the future... If you don't like the position you can always re-direct yourself. Decent jobs are competitive and hard to find.

Rogue

If it was me, I would take the job with Amtrak, but that's probably because I'm a big train buff.
