What should I bring to San Francisco?

Should I bring my hoodie or a sweater w/out a hood to San Francisco?

  • I'm going to san francisco for a giants game w/ my family and i've lived in san francisco for half my life and i was born there but we moved. although i go back every year, the weather sometimes gets to me. so we're going to a game and i know the past giants game on friday was raining and i know it's always cold in SF and of course i need a sweater but i'm not sure which one to pack (gotta make sure i meet that weight requirement for my baggage)...i have a giants sweater that's oversized (because i bought the wrong size...go me!) and there's another sweater that's my correct size but w/out a hood...which one is more suitable to bring? http://shop.mlb.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11247923&cp=1452365.1452882.1485433 http://shop.mlb.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10883614&cp=1452365.1452882.1485433 amazing how after a year, mlb still sells them.

  • Answer:

Hoodie, definitely. Layers are better than one large garment. It can get very cold and foggy in July, you'll want your head to be warm. BTW, Mark Twain never said that quote about SF.

Either one would work but the hoodie could keep your head warm. Yeah, it's cool in summer in SF, but IMHO, it's better than the oven in the deep South. Also, it's easier to get comfortable putting on a hoodie or sweater shirt. When it's 95 in the shade, you can wear a tank top and still be uncomfortably hot.

i would bring more than a sweatshirt to be honest with you. i would probably bring the hoodie one, gloves, and maybe a jacket to go over. i always freeze across the bay at a's game. I usually wear thermal bottoms from smart wool, jeans, smart wool socks, warm shoes, long sleeve t-shirt and my thinsulate warm wool jacket and gloves. the hoodie one will keep you warmer because it will cover your neck.

To save on space in the luggage, could you bring the sweater and a lightweight hat? Cheap thin pair of gloves? I'm sure you know, afternoon in SF is always about 65.

There is a reason why Mark Twain said "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." And this summer seems to be the beginning of the next ice age. So be safe, take the hoodie.
