How is the job market in the San Francisco Bay Area right now?

  • I've been hearing that there are a lot of people losing jobs in the Bay Area. However, I would like to know how the job market is. Especially in the Pharmaceutical and Biotech fields. Is it as bad as people say it is? Can anyone tell me how good and bad the job market is in San Francisco Bay Area?

    Unemployment is holding steady at about 12% and that doesn't take into account the huge number of people who have given up on finding jobs or who are underemployed. As to your field of expertise I can't answer. You might want to check with a recruiter that specializes in placement in the Pharmaceutical and Biotech fields. Single best piece advice I can give is if you have a job where you are keep it and don't move to SF [which is very expensive] without securing a new job.

The unemployment rates, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics is: California (State): 12.6% San Francisco/Oakland/Fremont MSA: 11.0% San Jose/Santa Clara County MSA: 12.3% New statistics for April 2010 will be released by the Bureau on May 21. You can log into their website at: www.bls.gov. Click on unemployment rates and you can select individual counties or cities as small as 25,000 population. The 7 counties around the immediate San Francisco Bay are (counter clock wise): San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Sonoma and Marin. The rates for the counties vary from about 8% to 12.5%. Fremont had a big hit last month with the closing of Saturn auto plant (GM/Toyota venture) with the loss of 4,500 employees. With the associated suppliers the total number of unemployed there climbs to 21,000 for this venture alone, but it unlikely to affect either San Francisco or San Mateo county in any appreciable way.
