Places to see and places to avoid in San Fran?

  • I'm going to San Fran in a couple months. I haven't been there in 15 years and I don't know the city very well. I was wondering if there are any places that I should see and places that I should avoid? Any thai/chinese restaurants? Any suggestions on places that I should stay that aren't too expensive but aren't dumps either? Are there any parts of San Fran that are bad areas of town?

    Places to see are Fisherman's Wharf and the Clock at St. Francis hotel and golden gate bridge, ghiradelli square, and take a ride on a trolley car of course.

There is a little authentic dim sum place I love in china town on Pacific Ave (go up the hill 2 streets from Grant, not down). It's called Dim Sum. They bairly speak english but you can have a very filling dinner for 2 and it costs about $10-15 TOTAL (not per person). My mom and aunt went there a long time ago and I've been a few times since. Stay away from 6th & Market (tenderloin/redlight district). Lots of people bumming for things. Only pass through in a car if you must.

It's been a while since I've been too but you ask about Chinese restaurants... why not go to China town during the daytime I can't see how you could go wrong there. I don't remember the name but there was a place there that had a reddish orange tile front on there building they used to be really good. There's another little out of the way place to check out too not so much for eat in food but for take out it's the Eastern Bakery on Grant, you'll have to look up the address and such but I love the pork buns from there and the bean cakes (flaky little cookies - no yolk) and the melon cakes (like the bean ones just different filing, again no yolk.) Hope you have a great trip!

You should go to: China town, Little Italy, Pacific Hights,,, Probably boring to go to downtown. Also Castro is good otherwise you are a gay-phobia.
