Can you walk up a hill both ways?

What is the best place to start in san francisco's china town if you only want to walk down hill?

  • I have my elderly parents who cant walk up hill. we want to see china town. what is the best inersection to let them off at so they can walk down hill only? Then, what are the bottom streets to pick them up at?

  • Answer:

Chinatown was basically built on the eastern slope of Nob Hill. The very top of Nob Hill is Grace Cathedral and Huntington Park. You would go down California or Sacramento Street from there. But while it is far less strenuous (physically) to go downhill, the almost 25 degree angle of decent from the cathedral is much too quick for comfort if you are older and aren't used to it. I would drop them off a little further down the hill at California and Grant; Sacramento and Stockton; or California and Kearney. - Kearney is the flattest of the three. But it is perhaps the least interesting for sightseeing purposes because it only skirts the edge of Chinatown. - Grant is probably the best for sightseeing. Even though it is more touristy, it has the red lanterns, flags, and architectural flourishes you see in the movies. - Stockton is a little less flashy than Grant and caters more to locals.
