I need a beautiful camping spot in Northern California near a lake?!?
-
I am a recent resident of Marin County, CA. I want to bring my boyfriend of 5 years to a beautiful camping spot that is near a body of water (a lake preferably). I am not familiar with the area and really don't have anyone here to recommend anything. We are a simple couple that love the outdoors, fishing, hiking, and etc. Any help would be appreciated!

For years, my family has rented cabins at Pinecrest Lake in the Sierras (about a half hour/20 miles NE of Sonora, easy to drive to) -- it's GORGEOUS and the people who go there are so easy-going (at last a place where you don't have to worry the guy next to you is a serial killer, lol) but camping near the lake is SUPER-crowded (I call it shantytown because they crowd the campers in). There are great cabins for rent near the lake, see Brezina-Goode Realty if this appeals to you. Or you could look into places in Tuolumne County (call the Parks and Rec Dept. or visit their site) that you can hike in to or even get horses and pack in. There are loads of little lakes and I don't doubt that you would find something secluded as long as you don't go at the height of summer. It's a beautiful place and a permanent part of my life.

Why a lake when you are so close to the ocean? Anyway, I haven't camped at many lakes but here are some fairly close ones you can search for camping info: Clear Lake Lake Sonoma Kent Lake or Alpine Lake; Mt.Tam.

I'm a native of the Bay area(born in Marin county). My favorite lake by far is Shasta. I use to camp there every summer. My favorite campground is Antlers resort at the north end, but anywhere on the lake is great. Another place that is nice is clear lake. You can camp at the state park there which is very nice. For a place near you, camp at Samuel P Taylor state park(Marin county). It does not have a lake, but a stream. It is all about the redwoods and is a true gem for camping. Finally a great source for all California camping is a book called California camping by Tom Steinstra(he writes for the Chronicle). This book has been called the bible of camping. I use it so much, that I have to replace it every 3 years or so.
