What's San Francisco like?

Im heavily considering moving to San Francisco in 2 weeks and was wondering whats it like to live there?

  • I am just dripping with questions so all answers are helpful. I don't want to make an expensive mistake. Is it an ok place to live? Are the people nice? Is it REALLY packed with gays or are there some Straight people there too? :) Like can you tell that WOW this is really a "gay" town or is it not that noticeable? And how is the weather in the winter?

  • Answer:

San Francisco is a wonderful city, and i'm not just saying that because i live here. the Cost of living here is pretty high, but if you can find some roommates to help share the cost, it shouldn't be a problem, also if you move a little outside of the city to a suburb the costs may go down a bit(public transportation is great so you won't have to worry about getting in and out of the city if you move to the suburbs). The people here are VERY nice. especially in berkeley. It's also very diverse so you will definitely meet different people from all ends of the world; most all of them speak english. (: San Francisco is known for its gays. People here are very open about it. There are gay people all over the world but San Francisco is one place where they can be openly gay and not be judged. most everyone here is very liberal. but if your concern is that the city is all gay people and no straight people then think again. it is like any other big city filled with lovely and interesting people. yes there are many straight people. and for the winter, it really depends where you are living within the bay area... if you move further east of the bay the weather is pretty nice during the winter. temperature is about 40 - 60 degrees with some showers. overall its a great city and I wish you all the best of luck if you move here! have fun! and i hope i was able to help a little bit! (:

If you're worried about gays then I wouldn't suggest moving there.

Visit SF before you take the plunge and move there. Some ppl are openly gay (men walking arm in arm) and some are not. Some older ppl are never married not bc they are gay but bc they have the looks of an accountant and the personality of a toad. Or is it the looks of a toad and the personality of an accountant. Or they just don't have the $$ to attract a spouse. Most ppl in SF are straight, to answer your question. In winter, it rains and is "cold" (meaning 40s) but nothing like winters in Chicago and NYC. Are the ppl nice? Some are, but it is a big city and I would not expect the ppl to be like nice ppl in small towns. One thing about SF that strikes me are the huge numbers of ppl who cannot speak any English, not even broken English. I would never move to Germany w/o learning German or to Spain w/o learning Spanish, yet there are ppl who live their entire lives in SF and never bother to learn English. Again, you have to see SF for yourself before moving. If you do not have a job lined up, don't just move all your belongings to SF. The unemployment rate is 9-10%.

Like the others said, SF is a very mellow city... considering it's a big city, its very laid back and relaxed. Ohh my goodness, if you are thinking about moving to SF expect a lot of gays...but of course there are plenty of straight people too! There's a street called castro, that's their street...If you go there during their parades or on halloween it's one interesting scene! haha They are really nice people though. The people here are very nice...Its a really good place to live, but the cost of living is very high..and it's hard to have a car if you live in an apartment & because of parking and whatnot. The weather in the winter is sometimes better than the weather in the summer. But it never gets hot there. It's usually pretty cool & windy & you will have a wardrobe FULL of scarves!!! :) haha

Consider a tiny studio apartment will cost you $1,200. Consider unemployment is 10%. There's good and bad people there, just like anywhere else. There are some gay areas like the Castro and Polk street areas.Outside of that,it's not going to be noticeable.I'd say most gays don't even look gay, so you wouldn't know anyway. Winters are cold and wet.The city is cooler most of the year because of the bay. It's a great place to live if you have the money.

It is incredibly expensive place to live AND there are no jobs there at this time. As well, even if you did get a minimum wage job, you would have to share a 1 bedroom with 4 other people to live in the city.

*_~ San francisco is great and mellow. I would say it's part Los Angeles and Seattle. Enought things to do, yet still mellow if you want it to be. People are more open minded here and seem more down to earth compared to LA, but not as much as seattle. I grow up here, always wanted to leave Bay Area However after my travel for the last 7 years to Seattle, LA, San Diego, LAs VEgas, Florida, New Orlean, HK, China, Japan, Hawaii, Thailand and Europe.. I can tell you that there's no place like the Bay Area!! I just love the weather and the diverse culture here!! Traffic can be hectic but still bearable. Public transport is great! You can always take Bart, ferries, bus, taxi or cable car etc. However, if you don’t have much time or want to travel beyond the city – I think a car would help a lot. Yes, you have to pay for parking, but save you time to go more places faster.. Embarcadero is wicked nice, and it's not THAT far, so you could really just walk down it to the Ferry Building. On Saturdays they do a nice farmer's market and you can get lots of good stuff. Walk down to Pier 39. Ferry Building Pier 39 Alcatraz or Angel Island Japan town Lombard Street Chinatown Coit Tower Fishermen's Wharf Union Square for Shopping Golden Gate Park – Walk across the bridge Academy of Science Union Street Ocean Beach Exploratorium Palace of Fine Arts San Francisco Zoo Westfield Shopping Centre DeYoung Museum Yerba Buena Gardens SF Giants Fair at AT&T Park Take the ferry to Tiburon or Sausalito Segates are great way to travel around the city. *_~ Unique places in San Francisco http://www.supperclub.com/ The famous "Beach Blanket Babylon "<-- bring your camera! Asia SF<-- you have to bring your camera to this dinner show. Academy of Science during the night time- $10 buy ticket in advance.
