Many questions about San Francisco State University?
-
Okay, i have some questions concerning this school: First, how is the social life on campus? If i live on campus, can i expect a fun atmosphere with fun people and parties or a boring atmosphere (i'm talking about the Village at Centennial Square...i'll be living there)... how is living at Village at Centennial Square? Second, will i need a car if i live on campus? Or is public transit suitable? Third, what is thier to do in San Francisco - what do the college kids do on weekend and such for fun? And finally, overall - is San Francisco State a good school... academically and socially?

Answer:
1. It's mainly a commuter school, so I wouldn't expect the kind of dorm life you'd have at a campus with a lot of students residing on-campus. Campus life is probably okay, but not like Animal house for example. 2. Muni stops close by, it's doable to live without a car. If I were you I wouldn't have a car, but of course public transit can be invonvenient at times. 3. There's tons to do in SF, from museums, to clubs, to great restaurants, to parks.... There's no reason for anyone to be bored here, except maybe new yorkers who are used to everything being open 24 hours a day (most clubs close around 2 although there are a decent amount that are open later, there are a decent amount of 24 hour restaurants to choose from too). SFSU is a state school with an average reputation academically. If you can put up with/like preachy leftist professors I think you'll be fine. If you want a really fun dorm life though, I don't think this will be what you're looking for.

I've been going to SF State for almost 3 years now- I like it, it's a good school, but it's almost always super cold and foggy. I have met a lot of great professors there who really care about my academic career and my future. People are generally nice on campus, you'll get to meet a lot of people. There are a lot of activities and groups you can join on campus. I don't live on campus, so I'm not too sure about what it's like living at the Village. You don't need a car- a car is trouble in this city. I had my car here for a while but got so many tickets that it wasn't worth it- $1,100 in tickets! SF has great public transportation! The muni is just ac cross the street from campus and it'll take you downtown in about 20min. On weekends I like to go out to clubs, bars and pubs downtown- don't worry, you'll have plenty to do here!

Muni is pretty reliable except at night. During the day the busses and trains come every 10-20 minutes depending on which one. At night it's runs about every 30-60 minutes. An adult monthly pass would set you back $45. Many people don't know this but it's also good on the cable cars. I would recommend Muni unless you often go out at night. San Francisco State is a pretty good school. You'll get classes from Monday through Friday, most of the 50 minutes long. Socially, most people in the city and in school are pretty liberal. If you like to party, just join a Frat. Finally, San Francisco is a pretty interesting place if you are willing to take time to travel around. If you do, you'll love it as much as I do. Well, let me know if you decide to enroll to San Francisco State.

SF State has always been a commuter school. You will get out of it what you put in. The opportunities are there, but to qualify for advanced studies in this or nearby universities, it's best to know what you want out of the school early- on and then strive for it. Chico State has the reputation of being a party school if you are going for a social reason.
