Is Big Sur Walkable?

Question on Big Sur CA?

  • I live in Columbus Ohio and Im trying to find flights to Big Sur CA. But Im having a hard time finding the airport for/ around Big Sur. I was also wondering what the cheapest site would be to look into and also places to stay. Possible 4 people who are traveling with me. Any good sites to look into with photos and information?! Thanks!

There is no airport in Big Sur itself. I just went there this weekend. It is about a 2 hour drive from the San Francisco airport along beautiful coastal highway. When it comes to where to stay, if you're camping I recommend the Fernwood resort. The camping is right on the river!...But here's a link to lodging: http://www.bigsurcalifornia.org/lodging.html Big Sur Lodging Guide, Hotels, Resorts, Cabins, Vacation Rentals Big Sur California Sight seeing is a must, the Julia Pfiefer waterfall is the most beautiful sight in Big Sur. Its only about a 10 minute walk from the entrance to Julia Pfiefer State Park. http://www.carto.net/neumann/travelling/big_sur_2003_10/077_mc_cay_waterfall.jpg 077_mc_cay_waterfall.jpg (JPEG Image, 819x614 pixels) http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=578 Julia Pfeiffer Burns SP Just went last week...hope you have as much fun as I did!...Oh food at the Fernwood resort is awesome too...the atmosphere isn't great, but the BBQ is wonderful!

~San Jose, CA airport. ~Monterrey and Carmel are pretty cities and they are nearby. ~Will need to rent a car to drive to Big Sur.

the closest commercial airport is Monterey, but it's very small. Otherwise San Jose would be the closest airport.

Try flying to San Jose, Southwest may fly there. The town is a bit remote down the Pacific Coast Highway. A b&B may be your best choice; also check hotels in Monterey, Carmel, and San Simeon by the Hearst Castle.

Big sur is located approximately halfway between San Jose & San Luis Obispo. So either would be an option. But be prepared to drive 100 miles one way from either spot. Big Sur is a very remote area on the california coast. Salinas is technically the closest airport, but I don't think they have commerical flights into that area. I believe it only caters to single engine and twin engine aircraft and helicopters. Monterey has a very tiny airport that does have commerical flights going in on Delta, America West, etc. but be prepared to pay through the nose and to stop a lot. There are no direct non-stop flights to Monterey.

I just wrote about a road trip from L.A. to Big Sur, you could check it out for fun stuff to do while you're in the area (even if you don't have time to drive all the way up from L.A.). The coastline is truly stunning, so do spend at least part of your time driving Pacific Coast Highway. There aren't really "cheap" places to stay up in Big Sur but Deetjen's is somewhat reasonable and they have EXCELLENT food! And here's my article... http://wehow.ehow.com/how_2021012_trip-up-pacific-coast-highway.html

Your closest Major Airport would be San Jose about 120 miles north. A minor airport is Montery/Salinas about 30 miles north but this is commuter airport so you would probably have to fly into San Jose and then take a commuter into Monterey, This is the link to the Chamber of Commerce that will give you a lot of information on Big Sur
