Whats the difference between a city, a state and a city-state?

Difference between San Fransisco and Los Angeles?

  • I'm a college student that goes to school in California, specifically the Central Valley. I've always grown up within the central valley in a small town and I also go to school in a small town. Basically, I'm so used to "small town" life here that I want to experience something different! It's so dull and boring here, theres absolutely nothing to do! I was thinking of transfering to a different school because I just want to get a feel for something different, and I'm also trying to look for a better school that fits my educational goals. I was debating between San Fransisco (or the Bay Area) or L.A. I want to get a vibe for the big city. Whats it's like and just overall experience a different atmosphere and environment than I'm used to. I've already been to L.A. numerous times since I have family there, but I don't really know too much of the differences between the 2 cities, or regions. I have hardly ever been to the Bay Area though. How do the cities compare in culture, environment, people, and weather?? I really just need to know how they're both like. If it helps, I'm a really down to earth chill girl. Im not that into the whole party scene. Im very open minded, and like i said i wanted to experience something new. Thanks! btw: I can't go to school in a different state thats why im looking throughout CA.

  • Answer:

SF & LA are about as different as they can be. They have very different features and are very different states of mind. If you live in a small town LA is going to be a much bigger adjustment than SF will be. Visit SF a few more times and stay a while you'll figure out pretty quickly if it is for you. It isn't for everybody but I can't imagine living anyplace else.

I don't know much about LA but San Francisco is gorgeous, eclectic. and just plain fun. There is always something fun going on and there's tons of stuff for free, not to mention its a very open, friendly place. The public transit system there is really good so if you don't have a vehicle don't worry about it you can get anywhere you need to go! There is just about every ethnicity there and people are great. I love San Francisco!!

If you are coming to SF temporarily you can try to look for sublease (people who are renting their apartments but are temporarily moving out and looking for a 'replacement'). SF has rent control and many people who were renting for a while would pay lower price. Your best bet is to find the people who are looking for a 'replacement' roommate. Try craigslist.com to search for rental opportunities and get a feel for the prices in different neighborhoods. Be aware of places that make you sign a 1 year lease unless your plan is to stay for a while.
