What are parts of Oakland, CA to avoid?

  • I'm going back to school in Oakland and know there are parts I should avoid but don't know where the school is just south of Berkeley on Broadway and College Ave. It's cute and college-y there. I'm living off Broadway and 15th on Webster St. right in Oakland Downtown. Where should one never really go? Also what are some of the cool spots?

    Specifically avoid the areas at night. West Oakland is where the Black Panthers started and is mostly an African American ghetto (Though they've been trying to clean it up). Ghettos include: Lower Bottoms, Ghost Town, 18th st., Dog Town, ect.. N. Overall I find the Oakland/Berkley border areas really nice. However heading down towards the Coliseum is always seedy.

stay away from the East Bay. Cities like Oakland and cities near Oakland in the east bay. That's where a lot of violence occurs. That's just the ghetto part of the bay area, the east bay mostly. There are crime, many gang activity, and violence in the Oakland area. One reason to explain it is the messed up hyphy movement. Too much rap and gangster there.....its a great city besides the rap stuff, just be careful...

I agree with Buzzy. When I'm nearby, I ALWAYS stop at the Last Chance in Jack London Square. They are very friendly. If you like zoos, the Oakland zoo is fun. Lake Merritt has Italian Gondola rides. Take your date for a meal at Oliveto's and then go for a gondola ride on the lake. Really, Oakland gets a bad rap. It is a nice place with nice people. There is a large black population, and boy can those ladies cook!!! Certainly, as in all big cities, there are areas to avoid- usually late at night. People get robbed in San Francisco too, and there are dangerous places there also. There is a Chinatown with good Chinese food. I always think it is more authentic since it is for the locals, not touristy like San Francisco. And... the weather is better than San Fran. Good luck- enjoy Oakland.
