Do people celebrate NYE in Embarcadero in San Francisco?

Do people in San Francisco still celebrate Christmas?

  • I know that being Christian in San Fran is like being gay in Mississippi, so I was just wondering if anyone in the city still actually celebrated the holiday, or is it avoided in favor of Ramadan and Kwanzaa?

Well, there are PLENTY of Christians in San Francisco, lots and lots of Christian churches too... And I am pretty sure that all of those churches would still be celebrating Christmas... But the truth is that in the United states, Christmas isn't really a religious holiday, it is a secular holiday. Take a look in the bible, you will find no Santa Clause, no Reindeer, not even a wisecracking snowman. Christmas in America is about settling down with family, eating a big meal, and giving gifts to each other, but primarily children. It has nothing to do with the incarnation, or the birth of Jesus over 2000 years ago... So given that context - of course people in SF celebrate Christmas...

Ramadan? Is this a joke? San Francisco was founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1776. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint. And the majority of the population - including Mayor Gavin Newsom and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi - are Roman Catholics. There's a strong Spanish (Latino), Italian, and Irish influence. The city is also the episcopal see of William Cardinal Levada. So, unless you're from one of those fundamentalist sects that consider "papists" non-Christian, you're way off base.

Actually, we've all gone pagan. If you are going to be all that closed minded with your preconceptions, you probably won't be welcome in any case.

Absolutely positively yes.

There are probably far fewer gays in SF than Mississippi, but just more closeted in Miss.. In SF, Christmas is not closeted, but out in the open for all to enjoy. The city is mostly Christian, so Christmas is big. Sorry to squash your stereotypes, but just silly.
