What's it like living in San Francisco?
-
I'm moving there to start high school with my parents and sister. I just want to know what it's like, all the features and an overview of the place. I'd love to take up surfing, so if you know any great surf spots nearby, I'd greatly appreciate it. Anddd I'm just very nervous about the whole thing because I've lived in suburban NM my whole life, and we are looking to live somewhere less busy like Albany or Alameda Island. My parents are looking at Berkeley too but I don't know about that... any specific points about Berkeley? What are the schools like in Albany, Alameda, and Berkeley? Thanks soo much!! I'm asking a lot, I know. I'm just a little nervous and would love to know what to expect. People say it's cold... is it? All year round?

Answer:
To start off i am A graduate of Albany high school Let me say albany is the BEST the school is so friendly unlike most schools in the bay area people are so nice and it has a nice quaint feel in albany its a supper small city but like only 15 mins from san farncsico San Francisco is a whole different league ,expect living in the area to be more faced paced and city like if your into the whole palm tree thing (i never found them that interesting, probs cause i was born here) There are ALOT !!! you go to SF streets are lined with them many people have them in there yards you can find them anywhere very common weather is Only cold if your close to the bay so albany can get chilly I suggest to stay away from berkeley personally its a nice place high school is beautiful but it has problems and the city isnt the safest (clsoe to oakland) closest place to surf is half moon bay HWY 1 California About 1- 1/2 hours from albany

The climate is very nice. Cool breezes off the ocean so it's always a little chilly, always 'brisk', and the air is always fresh and clean. Parts of the city get foggy in the Summer. There are some not-so-good neighborhoods but no 'slums' like in Chicago or New York. Lots of culture. Ethnic restaurants. Kind of expensive to live, but probably better than Tokyo there too. Nice views of hills and bridges. I would love to live in the city if I could make a living there.
I love it. You don't get the stereotypical "cali feel" but its beautiful! go down south to get the beaches

It's a perfectly fine place to live and Berkeley, Alameda and Albany all are perfectly fine places to live. You'll do just fine. Your vision of palm trees is southern California, though there's the occasional palm tree here, too. I've lived and been all over NM and the cold we have here is nothing like the cold in Santa Fe in January. Our cold is more of a chilling cold that makes you want a sweater - only below freezing now and then. I was in 40 below in northern NM and this is nothing like that. It rains (sometimes a LOT) and never snows except in the hills. The ocean is cold and treacherous - The Alaskan current comes down from the north, and a warm current comes up from the south and the two meet somewhere around San Luis Obispo - I don't remember in detail, you could look that up. Anyway, because of that, our ocean is cold and treacherous. Rip currents, great white sharks. People surf but it's a different experience from LA. It requires wetsuits and there are certain places that are safe and others that aren't. Lots of rocks.... If you are in Berkeley it will be a two hour drive to go surfing....San Francisco isn't so much like Florida as it is like Paris - maybe Denver without the snow. It's a fine place, you'll do just fine.

There really isn't a place like SF... SF is a city so it's not like a subarb...there are certian parts ppl are going to tell you not to go like the mission/ hunter's point (places that are like the HOOD) but are totally fine. Get from one end to the other is easy because the bus system is great... There is always something to do...It will be very exciting for you since you didn't grow up here. I love SF because it's cali but still city. you just gotta come here and find your ish like where you fit and stuff...And if you don't like it here there's always moving away for college or whatever
