Nice and reasonably priced areas to live in San Diego?
-
I may be moving to San Diego for Grad school and I would appreciate any suggestions of places to live. They would have to be not too far from San Diego State Uni and of course reasonably priced since I am a student. I've spend a few weekends in San Diego but would like to hear a local's perspective.

At this point in time, you aren't going to find alot of variation in the real estate market. Whether renting or buying, it's pretty much going to be the same across the board. (With the exception of "exclusive" neighborhoods of course) The best way to find a good deal is to grab the Sunday paper first thing in the morning and start looking ASAP! The good ones WILL get snapped up fast. So set up some appt,'s and go see some properties that fit your price range. But the most important thing; when you find something you like, don't dawdle! If it's a good price, and a good location, it WILL get rented almost as soon as it's put out on the market! So get out there and start looking! Maybe a good way to do it would be to find other students who want to share a rental? Also, alot of the prices are going to start increasing any time now, due to Summer vacation, and all the beach rentals will pretty much double in price, so beware of that of course!

North Park, South Park are inexpensive and cool. Ocean Beach is a cheap way to live at the ocean. Chula Vista is the cheap area and La Jolla is the expensive area.
Santa Barbara
Nice and reasonably priced? In San Diego?... East County (La Mesa/Grossmont/El Cajon...) is near State and reasonably priced but you will have heavy traffic during rush hours, its also further east, towards the mountains which can get hot, which is not "real" San diego weather. Chula Vista/Mira Mesa/Poway/La Jolla or anything near the beach might be too far away for you. In my opinion Clairemont/Kearny/Balboa, about 5-10mins northwest of school is where you should look. East County should be your second choice. They are both reasonably priced. Mission Valley is a young and lively place near Qualcomm Stadium and the malls, if you can afford it, is a nice place to live.
