Where in San Diego can I find free firewood?

  • To use for a bonfire.

  • Answer:

Easy. All those pallets sitting around make a great bonfire. You can find them down by the 32nd street naval base, behind the supermarkets or big-box stores like Target, Wal-Mart or Circuit City. The concrete fire pits on the beaches (namely PB) have been conveniently formed to fit a pallet perfectly. Now that's a city with some forward thinkin'. Stack 5-8 on top of each other and you will soon feel the heat of the sun! We used to find a huge stack of cardboard (to get it started) outside the stores on the corners of Mission and Grand/Garnet. Enjoy! UPDATE: Ha! That's funny; it was a cop that pointed me out to a stack of pallets to burn! 'Selective' is right. Anyway, pallets still work best.

The Thinker

Where on earth did you get the idea that it is illegal to burn pallets? They're built for single use, way too cheaply to bother spraying with any chemicals. I live in O. B. and seldom see anything else in the fire rings. Cherie: Thanks for the info. They may have changed the signs here in O. B. as well, I'll look. There are a LOT of beach rules that get selectively enforced.
