Jobs for minors in San Diego, California?

  • My niece is 14 years old going on 15 in a few months, and she needs a job. We live in San Diego, California and the beach and the mall would be a good place for her to work. Two places she loves going to. I not only want her to learn the responsibilities of handling money, but I also want her to have fun while working. What place would be good for her to work at? And what places would she not be allowed to work at? I understand that there are child labor laws wich prevent kids from working a few jobs. Are there any shops next to the beach that are hiring at a young age? She is also interested in Belmont Park next to Mission Beach. Wondering if they were hiring? Any other useful information would be helpful. Thank you!

    You need to worry about getting a work permit before you go job hunting. Talk to your school.

Girls (and boys) as young as 15 are hired by an animal kennel that my daughter works at. It's a great part time job if your daughter likes animals. Can't help you on beach/mall jobs. I suspect that she'll have to look pretty hard. Like someone said, she needs to check with her high school and get a work permit.

Places that are open late ( like the mall) might be more difficult becuase working past a certain time violates child labor laws. Try a place like starbucks maybe. The have lots of shifts ( shorter ones and day time ones) I worked there in college and I know highschool kids worked there too. I dont know about 15 year olds though.... Good luck!

If she loves the mall, I would take her there to look around. If there is a store there that she particularly likes, go on in and ask if they are interested in hiring. Make small talk with them, it should work out. Good luck. :)
