People in Los Angeles come to San Diego to getaway. (just kidding you Angelenos) So far what you have listed in San Diego is very nice. In Balboa Park you will find great museums and the San Diego Zoo. You asked about an outdoor mall. I suggest Fashion Valley just minutes from all the things you have listed here. Also just minutes from there is the old Point Loma Lighthouse. It's a state park so it will cost a small fee. The tidepools can be reached from there also and it's a beautiful spot. In La Jolla visit the Scripps Birch Aquarium. Also see the seals that have taken over completely at once was called Children's Pool at the La Jolla Cove. For a true flavor of beach living I would suggest Ocean Beach with it's very long pier. It is adjacent to Sunset Cliffs, a beautiful walk. Go at sunset (obviously) This beach again is just minutes from anywhere in San Diego. Lots of antique shops and really a laid back community. Mission Beach has an old amusement park (Belmont Park) with an old wooden roller coaster. This beach is a short walk along the boardwalk, south of Pacific Beach. It has nightclubs there as well. I would also take time to visit some place like Julian CA just east of San Diego in the mountains.

Redondo Beach has some beautiful views of the ocean plus gorgeous homes right across. As for outdoor malls you have The Block of Orange and Irvine Spectrum and Universal City Walk. And I know you said no theme parks but I highly encourage you to visit Disneyland/California Adventure, the theme park is beautiful and fun for all ages, I have an annual pass and I see people from ALL ages, couples, families it is not just for kids. They have a great outdoor "mall" called Downtown Disney with shops, restaurants, movie theatres, live entertainment etc and if you are traveling with your spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend it is very romantic walking around there and the Disney hotel, there's a beautiful spot with waterfalls and a gazebo which is great specially at night, plus at 9:25 every night you can watch the fireworks for free from that very spot. email if you'd like to see some great pictures I've taken there.
