Well, beware that most of the camping places at the beach are booked one year ahead. I liked Caspars in San Juan Capistrano. There is also Oneil Park in Trabuco Canyon which is nice but no where near water. La Jolla Campgrounds...

up in the mountains, big bear, a little place called idyllwild, on the beach, there are really many good areas.

Dos Picos in Ramona is cool, lots of trees and mountains, and there is a place in Jullian that was fun.
