Don't pay attention to Joe C. He gives the same generic answer every time someone asks a similar question. My biggest piece of advice would be to go to either Legoland, which is in the San Diego area, but about 30 minutes from Downtown.. or the San Diego Zoo. Your kids won't really enjoy the museums that much; too much reading! I'm 20 and a total little girl at heart, so take my advice and check out one of the two things I mentioned! Here is the site for Legoland: http://www.legoland.com/California.htm San Diego Zoo: http://www.sandiegozoo.org/ Also, while you're here, check out Corvette Diner. It is a really great 50's themed restaurant. It is a lot of fun and your kids will have a BLAST. I begged my mom to take me there all the time growing up! http://www.cohnrestaurants.com/restaurants/corvettediner/ If you guys want to have a beach day, check out Belmont Park. They have a roller coaster and it's like an old beach boardwalk type thing. Definitely a lot of fun! But, you may be spending quite a bit of $ on the rides and games, etc. They do have a lot of really fun San Diego themed gift shops that your kids will adore. http://www.belmontpark.com/ Have a great time!

Some must see attractions are the world famous Zoo, Sea World, and Balboa Park. Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the country. You can get a park passport which allows you entry to a dozen museums as well as the zoo. http://www.balboapark.org/info/passport.php http://www.sandiegozoo.org/zoo/index.php My favorite museum in the park is the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. It has some of the largest model layouts in the world. Kids get in free. http://www.sdmrm.org/ The Air & Space Museum is always fun http://www.aerospacemuseum.org/ There are dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum http://www.sdnhm.org/ The Rubin H. Fleet Science Center has a lot of hands on exhibits for kids http://www.rhfleet.org/ The New Children's Museum is downtown http://www.thinkplaycreate.org/ The Birch Aquarium is in La Jolla. http://aquarium.ucsd.edu/ The USS Midway is an aircraft carrier turned into a museum http://www.midway.org/ Mission and Pacific Beach are your best bet for fun in the sun. Belmont Park has a vintage wooden roller coaster as well as other rides. http://www.belmontpark.com/ http://www.missionbeachonline.com/ Old Town has a state park there that recreates life in the Mexican and early American periods of 1821 to 1872. http://www.oldtownsandiegoguide.com/ The baseball season opens in a few weeks. Petco Park is the home of the San Diego Padres major league baseball team. They also give tours of the ball park. http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/sd/ballpark/index.jsp North County San Diego is home to the Zoo's Wild Animal Park. There are multi acre enclosures where herds of wild animals roam plus lots of hiking trails. http://www.sandiegozoo.org/wap/index.html

well since I HAVE a 14 yr old (and 9 yr old): 1) The zoo and the wild animal park (both part of the zoological society) have enough to interest both. If you are coming in the summer, both have great evening programs too. 2) the "other stuff" in Balboa park really depends on your kids. I know my 14 year old hates the air and space, loves the Ruben H fleet center which has IMAX movies plus cool exhibits. (nature not avatar!) 3) Belmont park is fun and while there go to the restaurant with a wave machine (the wave house). Very fun. Its much more of a "carnival" type feel than say, Disney. 4) Legoland is probably a bit young for both - the 10 yr old will be a bit big for many rides and the 14 year old will be probably bored. I have NOT been in their new aquarium fyi. 5) beaches - the one next to the Del on Coronado is great and big, Moonlight beach in encinitas is very kid friendly, Point loma and the tide pools is very interesting. And Point Loma has an AMAZING view. 6) La Jolla - the seals have taken over the "childrens pool" but they are fun to watch. There are nice beaches and walking areas there. 7) if its warmer, Knotts Soak city will be open closer to summer. I agree with the corvette diner - note its in the gay neighborhood fyi. Also ***** Last resort downtown both my kids love, and up north, Ruby's at Oceanside pier. In Old town there is a house called the Whalen house that is supposedly haunted if your kids like that stuff! They have some great outdoor restaurants also (celebrates old california and its spanish heritage) if you havent booked it find a place with a good pool also! Oh and downtown we have a nice red trolley that takes you places and the kids enjoy.
