There are 3 hotels that I would stay if I went to San Diego. The first one is the Hyatt in Downtown. It's in the middle of town where practically everything is a 15 minute drive. There's a mall closeby called Horton Plaza. It's a multi level mall that has practically every shop you could think of and places to eat as well. In Downtown, there are a ton of places to catch some great music like Croce's and Patricks II where you can listen to some killer Jazz music. The food is incredible as well. The San Diego ballpark Petco Park is a stones throw away where you can catch a game in their new stadium. Practically every seat is a good one and you can even sit in the outfield for $5 which is rather inexpensive. The trolley over there can take you to Little Italy where you can get some amazing Italian food like Fillippi's...the lasagne and homemade meatballs are to die for. The second place is The Hotel Del Coronado. It's one of San Diego's nicer hotels. The beach is extremely close and the shops are quaint with restaurants aplenty as well as a supermarket where you can stock up on some groceries. The last place is The Hyatt in La Jolla. There is a mall called University Towne Center where you can shop and have a great dinner from places like PF Changs. There is an ice skating rink as well. In Downtown La Jolla, there are quaint shops and the night life is always happening. The food is incredible as well with a beach view from some places. I'm sure you'll have fun in sunny San Diego!!!

where the turf meets the surf

Depends on what you want to do. Do you like the beach area? I like the Hyatt Mission Bay. Awesome place. Great views. I've stayed there about 10 times. The Catamaran is nice too. Its a lot closer to the beach and boardwalk (Bay side). Lots to experience. Bike ridding, surfing, roller blading, skateboarding, etc. Decent (local) restaurants in the area too. There is also a relatively new hotel called Tower 23. I have never stayed there but I've been to the bar and restaurant lots of times. Its on the ocean side right smack dab on the boardwalk. Closer to Crystal Pier. This would be my first pick: Here is the website: http://www.tower23hotel.com. You probably want to stay down in the gas lamp district if you've never been to San Diego. Hotels tend to be a little more expensive there, but it's the main buzz in the city. The Hotel del Coranado is also very famous. It's a bit out of the way, but still a great place to stay.

Try San Diego Golfing clubs. They have a relax atmosphere and a very accommodating Hotel to stay.
