Whats a nice secluded hiking area in San Diego?
-
My buddies and I want to go on a mild day hike in the san diego area. The trick is we want to "get away" from the rest of society which is hard to do in the san diego area. I have already looked up parks like torrey pines state reserve and the mission trails regional park but have not visited them myself. What is a good area (whether it be official or unofficial recreation area) in san diego where we can go to get away from other people, and ideally still have a picturesque location to hang out at?

Answer:
Mission Trails Regional Park in La Mesa on Jackson has some great hikes. There's a ton of paths, some cross the river, others go to mountain peaks, it's a fun all-day brought-my-own-food hike. I could stay out there all day. There's one cute little area by the river where the river slows and pools up, my dog loves to jump in there and my wife and I eat under the tree nearby. If you're looking more for "intense" hiking, try Iron Mountain, 3.6 miles uphill will kick you in the pants.

I think Torrey Pines is awesome, but there are usually a lot of people there. I also like going to Palomar Mountain State Park, lots of good trails there. If you want to venture a little further, Anza Borrego State Park has some great trails. One leads to a waterfall (haven't been there for a while, so can't vouch that it is open). Not much in the town of Anza Borrego, there are a couple of good Mexican restaurants tho!

A really good place to go is San te national "forest". There a little river flowing through it, and there's a lot of different path's to follow. Also, you can bring you dog if you want to.

There are some nice hiking trails in San Diego that aren't too crowded, it just depends on when you want to go. Even the popular hiking spots will be less crowded earlier in the day and on weekdays vs. weekends. The further out you go the less crowded, as most people are on the trails within 2 miles of the trail head. Torrey Pines has a nice hike from the bluffs to the beach which is quite nice. At low tide you can hike south of flat rock along the bluffs and have a nice quiet stretch of beach to yourselves. If you continue another mile, you'll reach Blacks Beach which may or may not be to your liking. We like to hike in Elfin Forest, which has a nice elevation gain for a good workout, and nice views. If you take the botanical trail, you'll encounter fewer hikers. Daley Ranch has some nice San Diego hiking trails too, and a nice showing of wildflowers in the spring.
