Cheap, trendy AND water? Let me know if you find it! Well, if you are looking for coastal living, I would look for something South of La Jolla and North of Ocean Beach. So, that would be PB, OB, MB (Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, and Mission Beach). The further east and north you go the cheaper, hotter and un-trendy it gets. Downtown (East Village, Little Italy and Marina District) are very trendy and close to the harbor, but it's certainly not cheap. Mission Hills and North Park are trendy too, somewhat, but not near the water. La Mesa is a lot more affordable, but it's in the east of town, but you can get to the beach in about 20 minutes. Escondido is even more affordable (North East corner of the county), but its hotter than La Mesa even, and no where near the water NOR is it in the least bit trendy. Cardiff and Leucadia are GREAT little beach towns where you can still get the surfer town feel, but they are to the north and kind of inconvenient in relation to most of the activities Sd has to offer. Oceanside is much more affordable, but even futher north and can get ghetto-esque. Most of the new in town 20 something's end up in PB, MB and OB...in that order. My personal recommendation is PB anywhere along Sail Bay and Crown Point. Hope that helps.

Hillcrest and North Park are both nice, near downtown neighborhoods. They both have some pretty good restaurants and shops. They are relatively inexpensive (San Diego housing is pretty expensive in general). I have a one bedroom apartment in North Park that I am able to afford as a graduate student.

I think the area that is east of Balboa Park, but west of 805, South of 8 and North of 5 is ideal. These areas are commonly known as North Park, South Park, Golden Hill and parts of Normal Heights. Hillcrest is awesome, but you'll pay more, it's louder, and I'm not sure the cost is worth it. Areas west of Balboa Park you'll also pay more. The areas above are very accessible to all of the best parts of town, and have some of the hidden jewels that make SD so great - Big Kitchen, Rebecca's, The Linkery. If you want to be closer to water, it really depends on what kind of person you are - if you're looking for fun nightlife, walking distance to beach, bars, clubs, etc. go for Pacific Beach, or PB. If you are more chill, looking for hangouts, hippier atmosphere (I liken it to Boulder, CO, where I am from), go with OB/Point Loma. That choice you have to make for yourself. I hope the move treats you well!!! Good luck and welcome to town!

Try Ocean Beach or Mission Beach. It's an area full of younger college kids and drop outs and some homeless folks. But it's all good. Just lock your doors. No one's going to kill you, but you might get your car broken into once in a while. Pacific Beach is a little safer and trendier, but it's also more expensive. La Jolla even more so. If you want cheap and safe, you can try El Cajon or Santee, but not really trendy.

We just went there and stayed in the Hampton Inn by the harbor in downtown SD. Point Loma is a great place to live, and with the right realtor you can find great deals on a nice place. If you ever go to Seaport Village, check out the little "she-sells-sea-shells-down-by-the bay" store. (It's not really called that, but it is a great place to buy shells, not expensive;-).) We went there for 5 days, and that's plenty of time to do great stuff. PS Eat at the Bay Cafe!

Try North Park...or Mira Mesa...maybe La Mesa San Diego is pretty pricy and not as safe as it used to be...I don't know about trendy. maybe for some...

Perhaps Clairemont. But seriously, you are being too picky. An area in San Diego that doesn't have San Diego weather or water?? Maybe try Poway or Escondido, somewhere WAY inland. You seriously cannot find an affordable trendy place to live in San Diego and probably in many other cities, it just doesn't work that way.
