I'm thinking about moving to San Diego and am interested in the Pacific Beach area...where should I live?
-
Basically, I want to be in a safe spot! :) First, where's a good place online to look for a place? I've looked on Craigslist and I don't understand why the houses closest to the beach are less expensive. Are they usually older? I'm interested in living close to the beach, easy street parking(if that's possible), close to bars and restaurants. I'd also like to pay around $2000 or less a month for a 2 bedroom. Can you tell me how it works in that area? Thanks!

Live close to the beach...get a tan on that white skin, and take a really good friend, someone funny, tall, brown hair, and who lives by you now! Maybe her name is Liz

Most of the places near the beach are older and smaller. Parking is a serious problem on summer weekends. However, there are some good places to live in Pacific Beach. I think you really need to visit and actually take a look at what's available. There are lots of restaurants and bars in PB. It's a casual, laid back atmosphere and mostly a younger crowd....twenties. Craigslist, rent.com, and the San Diego Tribune are all good places to look. You will also find places just by driving around and watching for rental signs.

ok, well firsst off, close to the beach rarely has good parking. Second, 2 bedroom houses in San Diego dont usually go for more than around $1200. Also you say you want to live close to the beach. What does this mean? Are you from Arkansas and just want to live somewherethat you can drive to the beach within 20 minutes? or do you mean somewhere that you can look out your window and sea the ocean? Also, San Diego has like 2 kinds of beaches, La Jolla and Del Mar, which is more expensive and every where else. I really wouldnt consider any of the beach areas "unsafe" Imperial Beach has the worst stigma, but its actually been cleaned up in the last 20 years.

Look for something in the Crown Point or Sail Bay area.

PB is an interesting area. There are parties going on every day and the streets are full of bars and restaurants filled with college kids. If you want to live like you are on Spring break all year, PB is the place! There is a long bike path that extends along the coastline and there are only really expensive houses and vacation rentals there. It's funny because you will see people partying and drinking in the patios of those houses while the rest of the public is like 5 feet away on the bike path. Anyway, I haven't seen too many apartments there except for really tiny beat up ones. The more descent apartments are a few miles away from the bike path. But what's the fun in that? You will have to find a designated driver or take the cab to go out. Don't ever think about drinking and driving because the police will blockade entire streets. For your price, I think you may be able to find a small house because there are plenty of those in PB near the ocean and they are descent. (try the link below.) The place I like is Ocean Beach which is slightly south of PB. You get all the benefits of PB without the crazy people throwing up in your front lawn at 3 AM. There are still plenty of places you can walk to but if you really enjoy the outdoors, you will love Ocean Beach. It's a bit of a tourist spot but the place is clean and the views are amazing. South of La Jolla near the Bird Rock area, which is north of PB may also be an option, although I think it is slightly more isolated and less interesting than OB.

The pricing in PB is misleading. There are a lot of old run down properties that have never been upgraded. These you could get a two bed for around 1500 plus. Prices for one beds are going up with the low end being around 1200. For a nice place you would have to pay more, and of course the closer they are to the beach the more you have to pay. Properties within a block of the beach can often rent as "vacation rentals" in the summer they can fetch up to 10,000 A WEEK!!!!!!! Your best bet is to look at the sdreader.com and check the cross streets, anything further than ingram is a cycle not a walk. PB is fairly safe by any standard. You do get crime but its petty and mostly related to being in the party zone of So Cal. For 2k you should be able to get a decent two bed. Decent one beds are around 1800.
