What is Affordable, Safe and has Good Schools near San Diego?
-
We may be looking at moving to San Diego area. I am a part time working Mom with two small children. The job would be in La Jolla. The housing prices look insane. All the stuff I read about San Diego is helpful but geared toward singles. Instead of beaches I worried about the best schools (ok good schools since I can't afford the best) Where do average Californians live? school teachers, policemen, accountants ect. a neighbor offered to let me talk to his sister who lives in the area. after speaking to her I was really upset. she made it sound like I may never own a home again and anything that is affordable is dangerous... How do people ever afford to save any money? I know it isn't the midwest and my $200,000 home in a good neighborhood with great schools is a thing of the best. But I don't want to pass up a great opportunity because of housing. How can I tell one area from another? Thanks Mom from the Subs who may not be ready for this much adventure.

Answer:
It is daunting to move from the Midwest to San Diego and you have to realize that you are not going to own a house nearly as big as the one you're in now. Once you get past that-- rule of thumb is the further east you are the more affordable the housing is. I grew up in the more north county inland area of San Diego. There's a lot of housing there. Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Mountain, Escondido etc. The Poway school district.... including Poway, Rancho Berndardo and Mt. Carmel is one of the strongest in San Diego and last I heard even southern California. And it's very easy to commute from La Jolla to that area. The 56 and 52 shoot straight across between the two communities. So if school's are your priority, I would start looking there... maybe just at apartments and condos while you do some solid house hunting and can find a deal. Good luck. San Diego is expensive for a reason, it's an awesome place to live. WELCOME NEIGHBOR! : )

Try Del Cerro very near Mission valley area of SD...if still too steep, go a bit more inland to Tierrasanta, Scripps Ranch, maybe even Escondido. I know the latter is a hike from downtown SD, but depending on where you're commuting to, it moght not be so bad. There are PLENTY of good school districts in SD, it's just a matter of finding the neighborhood that is affordable for YOU. Good Luck!! Go Torero's!!!

The average person either bought their home 18 years ago or rents. Or they have a huge commute from somewhere like Hemet or Winchester. If you can accept renting a much smaller older place for more then your current mortgage and having your kids go to overcrowded schools that are messed up from NCLB then you are good to go to San Diego. No one there is saving any money. It will be hard for your kids to see all the local things to do and you not be able to afford that. Your neighbors sister is correct. I was born & raised there, we are many generation CA family. We would not live there now even if we won the $$$$$$ lottery - it is simply not family friendly anymore.
