Answer:
When you are in Southern California take advantage of the natural amenities such as the beach and the ocean. Stay at the Best Western Blue Sea Lodge in Pacific Beach here are some pictures and a link to book a room. It is right on the beach and is within walking distance of clubs and restaurants. I lived thirteen blocks away and would take staycations here because it was fun. I had my choice of anyplace in San Diego and made this my local getaway spot. http://www.bestwestern-bluesea.com/ In San Francisco I enjoyed staying at the Holiday Inn at the Wharf. It's picturesque and is overlooking all the restaurants and activities of Fisherman's Wharf. http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/en/san-francisco/sfofw/hoteldetail

It's very difficult to give an answer without knowing your interests and price ranges. If your son is younger (under 10), I'd suggest staying on Mission Bay. There are wonderful, SAFE beaches for kids to run around on, and there's no danger of being pulled under by waves like there is on the actual ocean beach. My favorite is The Catamaran, a nice kitchy-Polonesian full-sevice hotel right on the bay. You can get pretty good rates there, too (see below). In San Francisco, I prefer to stay away from the Wharf area. Although it is where most of the lower-priced lodging is found, it's very touristy, and much less authentic than other parts of the city. There are some nice boutique hotels around downtown such as Hotel Diva, Hotel Triton, and Kensington Park where you can dig up a good rate.

Downtown has some nice hotels, but I'm sure you will pay more for the location, which is just feet from the coast. Hotel Circle is another area with good hotels.
