I am torn between moving out to San Diego or San Francisco. What will fit my needs better?
-
My number 1 need is opportunity... I am super focused on my career and want to one day open a clothing boutique. I have researched the San Francisco area and the San Diego area and know that there are lots of awesome small boutiques. I choose these areas based on the type of people that live there and the whole atmosphere in general. I am a very chill and laid back individual and need a place to reside that exudes the same. My goal is to continue gaining as much experience in managment and buying for a small clothing boutique till I branch off to my own. Cost of living also is a huge factor. Having lived in CA, I understand it is expensive especially in these areas. Wht are some pro's and cons of moving to each area based on my needs?

Answer:
Generally SF is better for career opportunities b/c it's economy is more diversified and bigger than San Diego's BUT for your line of work, San Diego actually might be better or at least the same. I think the fashion and clothing industry are probably a little bigger in Southern CA b/c of LA. Also if you plan on opening your own boutique or business it will be easier in SD, SF has some of the most cumbersome, backwards laws and regulations and it makes it a very tough business environment if you don't have a lot resources. If cost of living is a huge factor then SD is better for that. It's significantly cheaper than the city of SF as it's much bigger and has more housing options. San Diego is definitely more chill and laid back than SF. SF can be kind of busy and hectic and the Bay Area overall is more of a rat race b/c it costs so much to live up there. For your line of work I don't really think the opportunities in SF are any better than SD, not any worse though either probably. It's cheaper here for housing and some other things overall, they always seem to be raising taxes and fees in the Bay Area such as tolls and trying to add a $.10/gallon "fee" on gas that some lawmakers are proposing up there; I'm from the Bay Area so I keep on local news up there. SD is more fiscally conservative; we don't even pay for trash pickup. And it's just more chill and laid back overall. People are friendlier here in my opinion. SF can be kind of yuppie and pretentious, less so in the East Bay. I like both areas but choose to stay in SD b/c I love it here and I think it's probably a better choice considering what you are looking for.

SF: You'll face temps of 50-60's mostly, Sometimes you'll get the rare 70's everyone will be sporting tanks! Lots of fog!Cruddy commute/ however good public transportation BART and buses (far warning its amazing and frightening to see these buses turn and maneuver on very very narrow streets) Cost of living super HIGH if you want to live in the city 1 bedroom apts. $1500+ really anything decent starting at $2000 but there is plenty of subs close by! Great small shoppes! Tons...however alot of them are going out of business with the economy, can't pay their lease Diego: mid 70's all year, occasional 80-90's in late summer. Fog some nothing like SF though Minimal public transportation (however great piers and sidewalks to go on your run/bike) Cost of living $800-1000+ depends on your area naturally! Tons of little shops, haven't lived there in a while so I don't know how the economy effected the shops! I found the people are more laid back here in compassion to SF

Not to be offense or anything, but there are too many gays in San Fransisco. Rather them there than here... But to answer your question, San Fransisco is a highly cultured and artistic city. It has trolleys, monuements, and festivals. Lombard Street is like a roller coaster too! But I woul stick with San diego. It's larger, has just as many things to do, and doesn't have frequent riots like SF.

Well, some things come to mind: 1.con: it is colder in San Francisco 2.pro: way more tourists visit San Francisco from all over the world; more shops, more employment opportunities 3.pro: transportation: San Fransisco is not contained as San Diego, it is spread out more but the Bart and street cars get shoppers to their shopping spree. I just love their transportation. 4.pro: Daly City is an affordable place to live, take the Bart to work 5.pro: car: you don't really need a car in San Francisco 6.pro: San Francisco has a LOT of entertainment stuff to do 7.pro: San Francisco is a laid-back city, more "hippie-like" BOTH places are EXPENSIVE 8. Okay, I love San Francisco 9. The Gap, although not a boutique is at the corner of Haight and Ashbury, there's a lot of cool boutiques in that area 10.pro: San Francisco: beautiful architecture and colors everywhere, it's an established area 11.con: San Diego: you NEED a car and deal with the horrific traffic

From the sound of your personality you look more of a type to live in Frisco. Their more laid back there.

Probably SF. Better access to import routes.

1. More of a sense of high fashion in SF; SD area mostly beach attire. 2. While both cities are expensive places to live SF is significantly more expensive. 3. SF better public transit. 4. Can't beat SD for weather. 5. Wonder why you've ruled out LA? Sounds like the Pasadena area, Silverlake area or Santa Monica area might be more fitting to your needs. Pasadena has lots of boutique type shops, very cool area, and housing prices have a whole wide range. LA area is definitely more of a fashion center than either SF or SD. If you assume that all of the LA area is the same you are ruling out lots of fun little neighborhoods. 6. Before you decide you need to do a field trip to all areas and answer the question yourself. Use this forum to gather information but make the trip out here first before deciding. Hint: Southwest Air has super cheep fares between the three cities.

If you're the type of girl who shaves her armpits, then go to San Diego. If not, then go the San Francisco. Both have vibrant culture and a boutique will do well in either place.

San Diego is a very expensive city to live and work in but it does have a great climate and lots of Mexican influence seeing as how close the city is to Tijuana. San Francisco is also an expensive city to live and work in but a boutique might work better especially of you cater to the gay population. They are great people, well educated and fashion conscious and are really into new designs and trends. San Francisco is very laid back and almost anything goes as long as it isn't too illegal. Also, you have a very heavy tourist industry in San Francisco.
