Is a day trip into Mexico worth the trip from Los Angeles?
-
I will be visiting with an uncle and cousins in Los Angeles from Vancouver BC and I am planning to take a few of my kids and family for a day trip to Tijuana (2 hours south of LA?) since we've never been to Mexico before and only the US. Is the trip down to Mexico worth a day trip? Is there a lot to see in Tijuana besides the bars and nightclubs?

Answer:
About 5 years ago (before passports were required), we decided to take a quick drive to Tijuana...seriously we did not even get out of our car, we were nervous. The city is disgusting, the people just throw their junk all outside their houses, toilets sitting out, etc. It is just ugly and dirty. ...and I don't know if this is true, but I have always heard that their laws are unlawful...you can get arrested for the dumbest things just because you're American, or Canadian, in your case. My husband, who is Mexican, won't even go there. The best would be to take a cruise to Mexico some day and see the beautiful areas much further south of the border...much safer.... ..But, the city of San Diego (just 20 minutes north of the border), on the other hand, is very nice...especially the beach towns just north of the city, like La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas, Carlsbad...very pretty towns. ...Also, if you decide to take the family to San Diego, you can stop off at Old Town, their historic Mexican area...they have a Mexican Village Market Place, a Heritage Park and tons of Mexican restaurants...very historic and haunted...there are tons of small historic buildings that have turned into museums when California was once Mexico. The people working there are very sweet, it is touristy, but also very nice and safe. My favorite area of all of San Diego.

If you want to see what TJ looks like - visit the Alley's in Los Angeles (garment district)... If you want to see what Mexico should look like visit Olvera Street. Both the US and Mexican government do not suggest travel to the border towns due to the drug cartel. The only way to visit Mexico these days is staying at a large resort in the resort towns and having security with you when you leave the resorts.
A Hunch
I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. I have just spent 4 days in Tijuana. It was a very pleasant experience. Tijuana is not pretty to look at, that is for sure, but the people were warm and kind at all times. There really wasn't much in the way of quality goods for purchase. Tourist crap is all over, but the quality stuff is scarce, but I have found that true in most of Mexico. If you just want to say you've been to Mexico, Tijuana fits the bill, but it is nothing like the interior cities. I went to a soccer game one night and out to Mexican clubs other nights, which was terrific but there wasn't a ton of interesting things to do during the day it seemed.
That's right I am
Mexico is an extremely dangerous place right now and specifically border towns like Tijuana. If you haven't heard much about it, you'll find in a quick google search that the drug cartels have overrun the country and violence is widespread. Having been to Mexico 3 times, I would say it's not worth it under the current circumstances. Most of the country is on the level of a third-world country, and the "safe" tourist towns have junk peddlers bothering you every 2 minutes to buy their "Mexican Junk" (necklaces, shot glasses, typical gifts you'd find it tourist towns anywhere).
The Truth Hurts
Border towns are often unsafe now. But, please do not think mexico is "3rd world country' as previous writer said. most of Mexico is NOT like the border towns. it is a beautiful country with huge cities as modern as those in Canada. come visit Mexico sometime when you can visit the interior of the country, not just the border areas.

If you want to die, go to TJ. Not a good place to be right now. And definitely NOT worth the drive. Not even from San Diego..

mexico's a 3rd world warzone these days, just get your cousin some taco bell in east LA and call it a day
