How much money would you need in San Diego for six weeks?

How much money do I need saved to move to San Diego, CA?

  • Hello! I am 23 years old, have been out of college a year. Within the last 6 months, my 2 friends (that I have known about ten years each, respectively), and I have been carefully planning our move from Boston to San Diego. We are visiting to find apartments before we move in about 3 months, and everything has been very well planned out. I have about $4000 saved up personally now, and hope to have around $6000 by the time we leave in 3 months. Is this a realstic amount? Here in Boston living is expensive and we have found a lot of apartments in the San Diego area in our range. I am just now, with the moving date getting closer, freaking out about my savings. (As for actual moving expenses, that is low. We are travelling across country and camping, staying in hostels, etc. so it will not be expensive. The remainder of our clothing and packed items will be in my large vehicle which is being shipped and split between the 3 of us). I hope my savings is a good starting amount. Thanks :)

I have lived here my whole life (28) and I think your amount of savings will get you by for at least 2months-depending on how you spend your money maybe more or less. Yes SD is expensive but so is Boston so it will probably be about the same as home. As far as the rents go, it will just depend where you guys want to live. I just moved into a new place 2 weeks ago, so I'm pretty familiar with the current rates. Some people are very exaggerated by giving you a basic rental estimation since it really varies a lot. For a good decent 3 BR- it will be between $1500 and $2000. Some neighborhoods I recommend are, College Area Pacific Beach Hillcrest (this is our "gay" community but let me promise you that there are about 50% straight people that live in this area as it is very nice, clean, and close to all) Banker's Hills Little Italy Stay away from the East Village. It is a newly developed area, but there is a lot of homeless shelters right there and is scary at night. That whole "careful where you park your car" sounds like someone just being racist. San Diego is a generally safe place and I'm sure you know people in Boston that have had their cars broken into. Anyhow, good luck to you guys! I went to Boston last year for a Harvard graduation and had a blast. Hope you like our place...a lot warmer too!

I think you are already in good shape with $4000 right now and hopefully $6000 by the time you make it out here. San Diego is expensive but so is Boston, so i'm sure the rental prices are not much more, if at all, than in your area. I think many people always exaggerate about the cost of living here; Buying a house is expensive but everything else except for gas is about the same. And since you are coming from Boston, I doubt it's that much different here, might even be a little cheaper b/c it's definately a little less expensive than LA/Orange County and the SF Bay Area. Not sure where you are planning to live but you might want to consider Pacific Beach given your age and that you are just out of college. PB is a great beach community with a young vibe, everyone here is 20-30. Lots of college and post college kids, including myself. Lots of people from the East Coast that are like you; just graduated and moved to SD to work and live. I've met so many Boston/New England transplants here, so you'll meet plenty of people from that area and all over the place too. If you are a baseball fan there is a Red Sox bar in Ocean Beach. You should look into PB though; great nightlife, friendly young people, best beach scene in SD, and just close to everything like Downtown, La Jolla, Mission Valley, Ocean Beach, ect... I rent a 2 bedroom 8 blocks from the beach for $1375 so it's not too bad. You can get cheaper the farther east you go. The housing stock is a little old so if you want nicer, newer apartments check out Mission Valley or La Jolla/UTC area. If you have a job lined up then you definately have plenty of money saved up. But if you plan on finding a job after you get here then you probably have 1-3 months max worth of money at $4-6k. There are plenty of jobs in San Diego but it might be harder to find one you want and that pays well. Salaries are higher in LA/OC and jobs are more plentiful there too. But the job market in SD is very good but just kind of competitive. I graduated UC San Diego almost two years ago and me and most of my friends have good jobs, but for some of them it took a little while to land it. You have a college degree and seem to have a good handle on your finances so you'll probably be fine once you get here. Anyways if you have any questions just ask, but good luck on your move.

I hope that you be sure that you will have a job before going there. You can do that by calling or through internet. From there, you can choose where to move! I know somebody who rents across Paradise Valley, a 2 room apartment there cost around $700.00+. It is more expensive over the UC San Diego area in La Jolla. I have read that it is cheaper along Mira Mesa and Clairemont than Pacific Beach! San Diego is so spread out! I had been there for 2 months last year. Before going there, I bought 2 maps, however, both were incomplete. I bought a 3rd more complete but too small to be seen by the naked eye. You will be needing a magnifying lens. I had only appreciated the whole of San Diego after riding the trolley cars. There are bus stations in most trolley stations. There is a trolley card which cost lower when you buy the monthly card. Check your local stores for this. Be careful where to park your cars. I knew somebody who parked his car at Ralph's in National City and was surprised to find his car with broken windows. A bag was snatched from a couple while doing laundry! A Mexican took her bag. There is an outlet store at the last American exit at San Ysidro. Beware of going to Tijuana. Residents avoid going there!

a couple more benjamins then u will be on ur way

It's VERY expensive here for houses, HOWEVER renting isn't too bad. You can rent a 2 bedroom for about $1500 to $2000 a month. Gas (I bought today) however is $3.15 a gallon. Oh also, it's the absolute WORST time to move here. This is a TOTAL tourist area, EVERYTHING is filled and busy. Come now, or come around November.
