Is there a lot of traffic on the fourth of july?

Do you think there will be a lot of traffic driving from San Antonio to New Orleans Thursday night/Friday?

  • morning for the 4th of July... We are traveling down I-10. My friend thinks there will be a lot of traffic but I beg to differ.

  • Answer:

Traffic in general will be decreased in the cities since most businesses and all government agencies will be closed. There will be people driving from one city to another along the way, and I-10 is a busy road at most times as it is the major East West southern route from Florida to California. However, a significant number of people who would normally have taken driving trips on a three or day weekend in the past will not now as the increased fuel prices have significantly reduced leisure driving. So while it may be a busy drive compared to some other routes you may have taken, I don't think it will be significantly busier due to the holiday, and may even have less traffic.

If you're going to be in San Antonio on Friday morning and leaving, you shouldn't have a problem, since people won't be going to work. On a typical day, traffic is pretty heavy before 8 AM and lets up gradually after that. But I think most people won't be working the 4th, anyway... those who are probably don't work a typical 8-5 job (i.e. medical professionals, customer service, etc.) so you should be fine. I'd be more worried about traffic in Houston, to be honest. Try to drive through there after 10 AM and before 3 PM, if possible.
