Has anyone been to San Antonio Bay?

Does Anyone Have a Recommendation for a Great Dentist in San Antonio, TX for Someone with SEVERE Dentophobia..?

  • Hi everyone, I'm re-posting this here, after posting this in the "Dental" section did not help aid my search. I'm hoping someone will be able to point me in the right direction here, since I haven't yet found a dentist here in San Antonio (although to be honest I had not looked for one until my teeth began hurting). Nobody else I know truly fears going to the dentist, so I have no idea who to ask. I need to see a dentist ASAP though, because I have suddenly found myself with two major problems: 1) Approximately 10 days ago I started having sharp, steady pain in my lower front teeth (central / lateral incisors and canines) which radiates into my gums and into the middle of my jaw as well. At first I could bear it, and just took my Rx Motrin (800 mg., q.i.d.) for the pain. However it has gotten so bad that I cannot eat, can barely speak (it hurts badly to even move my jaw) and has been keeping me up at night (I've been averaging 0-3 hours of sleep per night because of my teeth). I'm exhausted, miserable, and have never felt pain like this before (and I have dealt with quite a bit of pain in the past). Constant unyielding pain in the teeth / jaw now tops my list of "Auri's Top 10 Most Dire Life Experiences" (kicking "waking up during surgery" to #2 o_O). My PCP had written an Rx for pain medication to keep on hand (hydrocodone/apap 5/500, 1-2 q4h prn), for when my current health issues caused me severe cramping, and it has been sitting in my medicine cabinet for months unused. When the Motrin stopped working I went ahead and took two of them, and even though it had been 5 weeks since the last time I took one, it didn't even *touch* the pain. It made me nauseous and dizzy, but the pain was still there, loud and clear. =( I figure that's a fairly good indicator that something going on that only a dentist can fix. 2) About 9 months ago I got my top wisdom teeth in, and after the initial pain of them breaking through my gums, all was well. I haven't had any problems at all with them, until a little over two weeks ago. I first noticed a small, dull throbbing pain in my left wisdom tooth, and since then it's grown into a constant pulsing ache that is driving me mad. I finally went out and purchased a dental mirror, and to my horror it looks as though the upper left wisdom tooth has grown in SIDEWAYS (?!?), so it looks like it's entered back into my gums, near my jaw. Worse than that, though, is the side of the wisdom tooth (between my tooth and my cheek / jaw) looks as though something has eaten a good portion of my tooth away. I'm *extremely* squeamish about anything having to do with teeth, so I won't go into detail here, but I have a feeling it needs to be removed ~*yesterday*~ iykwim. When I was looking up info on wisdom teeth I came across this on Wikipedia... it's someone's dental x-rays, and their upper left wisdom tooth looks EXACTLY like mine: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d0/Impacted_wisdom_teeth.jpg The biggest issue for me, though, is my overwhelming fear of dentists. When I was 12 years old I had an extremely traumatic experience with a dentist who, unless I'm mistaken, is still in prison. I am scared to death even to have my teeth cleaned, and to make matters even more difficult I CANNOT STAND N2O ("laughing gas"). I have no idea why it bothers me so much, but I find that my level of fear and onset of panic attacks is a million times worse when I'm given N2O. If anyone knows of an excellent dentist here in San Antonio, one that knows how to work with a patient with a debilitating fear of dentists, I would be very, very, VERY grateful. Please though, ONLY dentists who can help someone like me. I can go to Google and just search "dentist San Antonio TX" on my own, however that will not tell me which ones are good with people who suffer from mind-shattering dentophobia. The last dentist I saw, back in Seattle, tried to hurry me along (even though I had scheduled extra time) and got mad at me when I burst out in tears and admitted to him I was terrified even to be there. When I tried to explain to him that even making an appointment, and then actually **showing up for it** (knowing that I needed a filling replaced), was a HUGE step for me, he asked me if I "knew how ridiculous that sounded". I have not seen a dentist since then, and now I'm scared not only that something will ho horribly wrong, but that I'll manage to find another dentist who finds my fear amusing. =\ Thank you ahead of time. I would happily give up a kidney (maybe two ::lol::) if I knew it might make the pain in my teeth stop. (--_--)

I feel for ya.I had not gone to the dentist for many ,many years and only went after having lots of pain.I ended up seeing this dentist 7 times this year to fix my teeth. His name is Steve Edwards and he is located on the NorthEast side of town on Nacogdoches/O'connor area in the strip mall next to whataburger and the federal credit union. I was afraid of the dentist as well and was also a big reason why I didn't go for many years.I also do not like laughing gas (long story) but I like to be in control of my body and mind at all times. The staff there is wonderful and the dentist assistants he has are not only kind and paitent but they care ,take their time with you and explain everything. He also does not charge you for things you don't need,he is not out to make money ,he is out to help YOU.It might be worth it if you live in the NE area of town.

Haha, small world! I was going to chime in and say Dr. Stewart, too! :) He's a great dentist, and his staff is awesome. I agree with what sydkan said - I haven't taken the greatest care of my teeth, and his office is the only place I've been to where the people that work there don't talk down to me for not flossing enough! So now that two people have said that you really need to check out his office! :D Call (210) 493-4040. The first time I called, I got an appointment the next day. You may get the same in your situation and as long as they're not too booked. If you need more specialized care, he'd be more than happy to give you a referral, too, if necessary.

There's a great dentist at the corner of lockhill-selma and huebner road. his name is William Stewart. My mother had the mother of all toothaches and he even came in on a sunday and helped her. He will also give you a pill you can take to help you relax. I've seen him and have a very high fear of dentist. Between that and riding a rollercosater don't know which I would pick!!! He's not the cheapest one in town, but he is very good and does not make you feel bad abou the condition of your teeth. I need much dental work and he didn't make me feel ashamed. Good luck, iknow how much you must hurt.

Dr.. Berchelman on Fair Ave, off IH 37 is wonderful. My husband hates dentists and I practically had to drag him there the first time. He willingly went back on his own several more times. He is personable, does a great job and has a great "bedside manner" try him.
