I am looking for a job in Sacramento.

Can a resident or former resident of Sacramento answer some questions?

  • I have a pretty good opportunity for a job in in Sacramento and I'm looking for some information about the area before I make my final decision. My wife lived up there in 01-02, but things change especially in this economy, so I'm hoping that residents or recent former residents of Sacramento will be able to give me some info. Housing and rental market information is easy to find - the internet is lousy with articles about every conceivable housing market. Everything indicates that the housing market, while not stable, is at least considerably cheaper than LA where I live now. I'm obviously not worried about the job market if I'm thinking of moving up there for a job - I don't plan to take the job unless it's everything I'm hoping it will be, and more. What I can't seem to find is information about the neighborhoods surrounding Sac (like Somerset, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, etc). Like, where are the good/bad neighborhoods? Also, taking those neighborhoods into consideration, how is the traffic from those areas into Sac? Granted, I don't know exactly where I'll be working, but for the purpsoes of this question, I'm going to figure that I'll be living somehwere in the outskirts and working in the thick of it. Also, is there any other information that will be helpful in my decision? How's the social scene? Is there a theatre/arts district? How's the crime? Is there a zombie holocaust happening now, or looming in the near future? Can you go out without having your leg humped by roving bands of horny stray pot-bellied pigs? I appreciate your help!

I love Sacramento - I've lived here most of my life. If you're going to work downtown, I'd recommend living within Sacramento itself. Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova & Citrus Heights require a 30-60 minute commute even on god days. I am not aware of any community in the Sacramento area named Somerset. I live near Sacramento State University and we're ideally located - a 15 to 20 minute drive to work, lots of great restaurants and shops nearby, good parks, schools, etc. I've got some things to do in Sacramento, including good restaurants, listed on my website - http://thingsyoushoulddo.com

If you're trying to get to downtown between 7am and 10am, your gonna hit traffic from every direction. Trying to get away from downtown is hell between 4pm and 6pm. Just like any city, though. Public Transportation is DEFINITELY the way to go. Just steer clear after 8pm, it gets pretty rough at times.

All the neighbor hoods you listed are great. Stay away from south Sac, and West. Traffic in Sac isint bad, About 460,000 people in Sacramento alone, but if you combine all the neighborhoods and suburbs theres about 1 mil people, so Traffic could be bad not like the Bay area, New york, or definitley not like LA. in the last paragraph you make it sound like Sacramento is the country...IT IS A BIG CITY(The have an NBA team, skycrapers, and a lot of people.)

From Elk Grove, you have your choice of two main highways into Sacramento: I-5 and Hwy-99. But not knowing what part of Sacramento you'll be commuting too, makes this difficult to answer. During normal rush times, traffic sucks. There is a light rail system that could work well for you. There is a decent amount of culture in Sacramento, theater, arts, etc. Not SF mind you, but not bad. 2nd Saturday Art Walk is always fun. Crime is not on a par with LA, but it's there. South Sacramento, Natomas, and parts of Rancho Cordova I would not want to live in. Check SacBee.com to keep up to date on most things. And the Sacramento News and Review for arts and alternative fun. You'll also have to get used to NOT showing Laker colors (lol), and having easy access to the Mountains and SF.
