Is portland maine a good place to live?

  • im considering moving to portland maine. i have heard some good things about it but after doing research and taking a trip there i am now not so sure. i have lives just outside nyc before and in a lot of other places around the country and currently live in a very quaint very small new england town. portland is alot bigger and i am looking to move somewhere a little more diverse and city like but cant move to nyc or boston at this time. what i am wondering exactly is how safe is portland? is it an enjoyable place to live? i dont have a ton of money so i wont be going to museums and expensive restaurants often so if thats all it has to offer i may not move there. i just read online that it has an extremely high crime rate for its size. and a high concetration of sex offenders? does this seem true to anyone who lives there?

I live in prtland, maine--smack dab in the middle of downtown actually...everyone i know who has visited me absolutley loved portland--i think its great but it depends on what your interests are...people always called portland "a large town with a city feel"...its obvioulsy NOT boston or NYC but portland has its positives that places like NY or bostonn cant compare to as well... 1. portland is VERY safe--- i dont even think to lock my doors..as far as sex opffenders go, it is no different than anywhere else--there are some weirdo's and vagabonds walking around portland but what city doesnt?? 2. portland and the surrounding area has plenty to do besides restaruants (and they're not that expesnive by the way)--there are mountains and ocean right outside your door so you have plenty to stay busy AS LONG AS YOU ACTUALLY DO IT---thats what people forget sometimes ..lastly if you do get bored Boston is only 90 miles away--you can be there in 1 1/2 hours
