Is Portland a good place to live in?

Would Portland, Oregon be a good place to live?

  • I currently live in Southwest Missouri but I don't like it. Portland is the best city that seems to fit me. Please answer these questions about Portland... - How would you compare it to Springfield, MO? - Is Oregon racially diverse? (I'm half Filipino but I'm used to being the only one in my town.) - What is it like politically? (I'm more liberal but Missouri is very conservative.) - Is it hard to get a job if you're in college? Could I like work at Guitar Center or something and be able to support myself? - Is it cheap/expensive to live there? - What are the people like? - Are the beaches in Oregon nice? - Is there a lot of stuff to do or is it boring? - What are the alcohol laws like? - What are other laws that are different from MO that I should know about? - Are there any Filipino restaurants? - Is the crime low? - Are there any military bases in Oregon? If there is, please tell me where. - Are they more laid-back than other cities? For example, if I went to a concert, would people be acting crazy or would they be boring?

Interesting. Let me see how specific I can get on this. Springfield I would give a 3, Portland a 7 out of 10 Oregon is diverse, a lot of hispanic people here. No idea about politics, I do not get involved in them at all Jobs are a pain in the butt to find, Oregon is still depressed. Of course there is a good college instructor at CCC who teaches guitar, and he will hire students at his guitar shop. Cheaper than Springfield, but not by much, rent for a 2 bedroom will usually run betwee $700-$800 per month. The People are friendly, a lot of church goers, the younger generation (teenagers) are pretty rough as there are a few gangs trying to take over. But just a bunch of punk kids who know no better Beaches are the nicest I have seen, I have seen a lot of beaches on both coasts. and the Gulf of Mexico If you like the outdoors there is more to do than you can find time for. Indoor things are not as much to do. 21 for alcohol, but you can not find true Everclear here, but they do have something close Taxes are higher here except sales tax, they have no sales tax, and Oregon as a state is really far in debt, and because of that they write tickets 99% of all traffic stops No idea about the Filipino restaurants, but there may be. Crime is lower than Springfield. Actually most of the crime is these punk kids I talked about before the rest isn't that bad. Fort Hood, about an hour east of Portland. (Only one I know of) They have a lot of concerts down by the river, and in the casino's those are pretty laid back, I have no idea about what goes on in the Rose Quarter where most things happen. Big sports fans, major league Basketball, Baseball and Soccer. Portland is ranked #1 for "Green". not the type of green that grass is, but a lot of environmentalist, but it is pretty and green as well.

@Frank: the mayor slept with a 17 going on 18 year old guy who worked for him, not some gradeschool aged child. To say 'child molester' is a little rash, especially since the relationship was ongoing and mutual long after the guy turned 18.

I am from Springfield, MO, now in the Northwest. Do I know you? I will give you as good of a run-down as I may. Trying to come up with a way to exchange e-mails without giving it out publicly here....

parting of the sensory...

you on drugs or something? Portland is infested with crime, and human traffiking, especially of children is a horrible problem there. It's one thing to be liberal, another to be into kids. Hell, even the mayor is a CONVICTED child molester and they don't vote him out. makes you wonder doesn't it? A truly disgusting city, polluted, you smell raw sewage every morning when they open the sewers downtown. People rob buses and stores in broad daylight. They say that a rape here occurs every 15 minutes. Portland sucks.

The Job market in Oregon is not good right now. I would try to make sure you have a job before you move across country. Plus the price of living is not that cheap you would be looking about 300,000 plus for a nice safe neighborhood. If you are coming for college it depends on your major but the biggest job market in the NW is all high tech like with Intel or Microsoft, 2 of the biggest companies that alot of people in Portland work for is Nike and Intel wich are both on the westside of Porland. If you are looking for more of a artistic part of town to live I would choose either Hawthorn or NW Portland like around the Pearl District or NW 23 and that area but they will be somewhat expensive. A positive thing with Portland is you dont need a car they have an awsome mass transit. I grew up there and lived there for 34 years and just moved away 4 years ago cause of the jobmarket and price of living plus I was tired of 9 months of rain.
