What are the public schools in Portland?

What are the best suburbs of Portland, Oregon? (schools, safety, recreation for kids)?

  • Our family is considering a move and Portland is on our list of metro areas. What are some suburbs or smaller towns (within 30 min of downtown) offering the best quality of life for a young family? Things to consider: real estate cost (more bang for your buck), schools, extracurricular offerings for kids - parks/rec/arts organizations, community feel with a "smart" and energetic vibe. A lot to ask I realize, but hopefully locals can steer in the right direction.

    Take a look at Clackamas or Washington Counties just outside of the Portland area. Both have great suburbs such as Happy Valley. Both also cost less in taxes than do Multnomah county. We live in Oregon City and really like it here.

I currently live in Portland, Oregon. I live in SE Portland, and I would say that is the best place to leave. It has one of the best public school systems in America, reasonably priced houses, many classes, activities, and parks, and it is the perfect place to raise a family. It is filled with vibrant, cultural, and alternative families who will welcome you right away. If you don't want to live in Portland, I would suggest Beaverton, which is OK, but not as good as SE! SE is also 15 minutes away from downtown!

The farther out in suburbs you get, the more Mexicans (almost half of them are illegals!) there are ... Hillsboro, Cornelius, Forest Grove ... keep that in mind. Beaverton has the best local school district in the suburbs ... Good luck
