Are taxes higher in Portland or San Francisco?

Additionally, Seattle. Could you rank the sales tax and other homeowners tax, etc. for the three cities?

Answer:
Using Seattle as the basis for comparison and $50,000 per year gross income, the cost of living in Portland is 8.29% lower and San Francisco is 35.12% more expensive. Oregon income tax: For single taxpayers and married couples filing separate returns: -- 5 percent on the first $3,050 of taxable income -- 7 percent on taxable income between $3,051 and $7,650 -- 9 percent on taxable income of $7,651 and $125,000 -- 10 percent on taxable income between $125,001 and $250,000 -- 11 percent on taxable income of $250,001 and above. California income tax: For single and married filing separately taxpayers: -- 1.25 percent on the first $7,060 of taxable income -- 2.25 percent on taxable income between $7,061 and $16,739 -- 4.25 percent on taxable income between $16,740 and $26,419 -- 6.25 percent on taxable income between $26,420 and $36,675 -- 8.25 percent on taxable income between $36,676 and $46,349 -- 9.55 percent on taxable income of $46,350 and above. Washington income tax: The state of Washington is one of only nine states that does not levy a personal income tax. Oregon sale tax: zero (except in Ashland: southern Oregon) Washington: 6.5% plus local additions. Seattle totals 9.5%. Washington also socks it to vehicle owners with a license fee based on vehicle value, so late model cars cost from $900-1500 per year. California: at least 8.25% with San Francisco adding 0.25% for a total of 8.5%. Property taxes are quite complex to generalize. They vary by "district", of which there are thousands in each state, and all rather arbitrarily drawn. Additionally, each individual property can have exemptions or extra taxes due to its history, being designated historic, agricultural, economic programs, blight, urban renewal, etc., etc. Also, each tax authority has different ways of assessing property and the types of items it applies the rate to. Generally speaking, Seattle's property taxes are 20%-30% less than Portland's. San Francisco could be about the same.

I don't know much about it, but I do know that sometimes these categories don't get a lot of answers. So I'll tell you what I do know. Oregon does not have a sales tax. Because of that the other taxes are usually slightly higher (income, property, etc) to make up the difference. I've heard it's best to live in Vancouver, WA but work and shop in Portland, OR. So maybe the income tax is still slightly lower, but again, there is no sales tax anywhere in Oregon! I love this place...
