Are there any good camping at the Coast, near Portland?

From the East Coast to Seattle WA or Portland OR?

  • My husband and I are active people. We're looking to move from the East Coast to somewhere around Seattle or Portland outside the city. We're both relaxed people, love hiking, camping, growing our own food, and trying to be as off the grid so to speak as possible. I'd like to get away from the constant aggression people seem to carry around our current area. After hours of research we've come up with those two areas but can't decide which would be best. Please let me know if you have experience in either or websites that might assist with the final decision.

Your lifestyle would be compatible with the Portland and coast areas of Oregon. Further inland and south may be too conservative. I have lived in Portland but not Seattle. Both are environmentally conscious areas. Seattle is much more cosmopolitan and bigger and more expensive to live in. Oregonians are laid back and mellow. You can find the Ken Kesey bus "Further" parked at a farm somewhere. Seattle weather is much colder and rains more. Portland has a small town atmosphere to me because I am from urban California. Seattle does have more hostels and places to rent than Portland. Both have ethnic diversity. Seattle has a larger ethnic population and you have a ferry to visit the islands in the straits and proximity to Canada. Both places are their own personality and advantages. Seattle would have more job and better educational opportunities. The aggression and directness of the Easterners is what makes it the center of the movers and shakers. I lived in New York city in the 1970s. Portland is an hour from the coast where the towns of Cannon Beach and Seaside are populated, whereas Seattle is directly situated on a body of water and has those water views plus a lake within the city limits. The nice suburb of Seattle is Bellevue. The nicest residential area of Portland to me is Lake Oswego. Any other questions, shoot me an email.

I'd add that Seattle has more rain than Portland although both are quite wet in the winter. Portland is a bit easier to get around in with better public transit (although Tri-Met does have a lot of problems).

I'll second most of what Flower told you. Seattle is a bigger city than Portland. Based on what you've stated I'd say Portland is probably more like what your looking for. Although, I reckon what you can find for employment will be the ultimate decider. You will find the atmosphere in Portland more laid back than Seattle. Seattle metro area has big traffic problems due to all the water. The sound and lakes Washington and Union mean lots of bridges and traffic gets funneled into certain congestion spots (I520 bridge). If you don't have to be in the city for work, then your decision is Oregon or Washington. The Mt Vernon Valley north of Seattle is beautiful, you could also consider living on Bainbridge Island (accessible via ferry to Seattle, or drive around via Tacoma). You are closer to things like hiking trails/mountains in the Seattle area than Portland. From Bellevue (suburb of Seattle), you can be at the ski areas on Snoqualmi Pass in about 40 minutes. Mt. Rainer is about a 2 hour drive from Seattle. Tax wise, Washington doesn't have income tax - they nail you with sales tax. The state/county/city have their own tax rates - I believe the total rate in Seattle is around 9.5%? The WA state sales tax is 6.5%, so you get to pay 3% more just for living in Seattle. Oregon has no sales tax, but has income tax. If being in close proximity to salt water is important, I'd go for the Seattle area. Portland has the Columbia river. In either case you need to drive an hour plus west to get to the ocean. The beaches on the Oregon coast are more developed than Washington's coast, but in either case the water is to cold to swim in.
