Is Portland, Oregon a good place to live?
-
I'm just graduated from college for graphic design, and I would like to live in Portland. I'm from Florida, and want to get out of the terrible heat. I love the rain, and I know it rains in Portland a lot. But, really, Is it expensive to live there compared to other cities? And how is Portland, really.

Answer:
Portland, Oregon http://www.portlandonline.com/ you will get rain, maybe more than you wanted, and possibly seasonal snow, you may get very hot weather during summer, but more humid from ocean breeze, They do have some Graphic design schools and Businesses , http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=%22Portland,+Oregon%22+graphic+design&aq=&sll=45.525111,-122.655659&sspn=0.049068,0.081711&gl=ca&ie=UTF8&hq=graphic+design&hnear=Portland,+Multnomah,+Oregon,+United+States&ll=45.522225,-122.665958&spn=0.049071,0.081711&z=13 Cost of living may be about the same, depending on job and city location, http://www.worldstar.com/~pdxpro/pdxlife.html http://www.bankrate.com/calculators/savings/moving-cost-of-living-calculator.aspx things like hydro would go up during winter, location to downtown area increases, ..

Portland is amazing, love the town! It's artsey, fun, and interesting. It sure rains alot though, but the Sumers are hot:)
I live twenty minutes from Portland, Oregon and it is an ok place to live. We do get a whole lot of rain. (five days of rain for every two of sun) Yes, it is relatively cheap and there are alot of jobs. You would like Portland ONLY if you like huge cities. I mean huge. Portland, though, is one of the most dangerous places in Oregon. Like any other city i guess. Three words to sum it up; over-crowded, huge, wet. In my opinion Portland sucks. its one of the melting pots of Oregon. There are alot of wierdos.

Portland is beautiful and unique and perfect for anybody artistic. Its rainy alot but 80 average in the summer. the portland public school district is crap so I suggest, if you ever have kids there, to move to a suburb of portland. I dont think it is expensive to live here. I love this city sooooooo much. I think if you are prepared for strange people, a great artistic community and beautiful forrests then move here.

Good question. Well as far as I know in this is just my opinon because I am able to have it and I respect everybody else and where there from I reccommend Texas all the way. Its like the biggest state and cheap to live in most cases. Alot of people most are friendly and eveybody here feals like their home. Its hot in most of Texas but West Texas does get cool at night and North Texas panhandle Im sure you would like. Whats cool about here is wherever you go people are the same and we all connect easy so yeah I love it. I know somebody from the area where you are looking and he said he was looking to go back but i actually think he winded up staying here. Checkout Texas first atleast and see what its like. The small towns near the bigger cities if you can are best to make new friends etc. We have a ton of country here but we also have cities. We have real cowboys here but a ton of city style people as well. So pretty much everyones cool.

Washington State has a better economy and it rains as much. Portland is gorgeous as is Seattle but If I were to go to a west coast state Id go washington over california or oregon, It has the rain yet a good economy. More Job Opprotunities for you.

Portland is generally a good place to live and raise kids but the key factor is good family morales and values to keep kids out of trouble. l have lived here for about 15 years and I am ready to move out. There is gang violence here from time to time and your friend needs to put importance on family activities and surround the children with positive influences and people. There are many activities here that they can do as a family and get involved with others that have the same interests. There is a lot of camping they can do as well around here. My perfect camping spot though is in southern oregon around reedsport, coos bay, and florence as there are dunes that you can ride on but there are also camping spots closer to Portland though they are a bit more primitive. Hood River, about 45 minutes to 1 hour east of here offers wind and kite surfing and isn't far from Mt. Hood for skiing. Just put emphasis on family values and your friend and their family should be okay. Laurelhurst area, Parkrose area are good areas. Both are on major bus lines and Parkrose isn't too far from the airport by car or lightrail. Our lightrail system is growing. One of the lines does go from the airport out to Beaverton. Best place to live is in the Parkrose District. Stay away from downtown. Parts of Gresham are okay but you can tell by the neighborhoods no matter which part of Portland you're in what is good and what is not a good area.

I have never heard anything bad about Portland, I think it's a semi happy place o live. If it rains alot i'd assume the suicide rate is higher, like Seattle. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ApXqyhcoKhQrkVcdigIC_cwM_dw4;_ylv=3?qid=20110626205041AAMYjSD
