Where is a good place to live in Portland?
-
I'm moving to Portland in a month and am totally unfamiliar with the area (I got a job up there). I just graduated from college and am looking to live in a young, hip part of town where the rent is reasonable. I'm also concerned about where to meet new people, this is the first time I've moved out of state, so any suggestions on some good meet ups, bars, community orgs etc?

Answer:
Well, you need to determine what is "reasonable" for rent. If you are coming from New York or San Francisco, you will be happy with almost all of the rent costs. If you are moving here from Ohio or Michigan, you might be a little surprised. I would also suggest trying to move somewhere fairly close to where you work, which you didn't mention the location of. Portland is a fairly big city and commuting from one end to the other can be a long trip. The "hippest" areas of Portland are going to be the Hawthorne District, Belmont, Alberta Arts District and Hollywood. There are other areas, too. Some areas kind of run together and it just depends on what you find. I posted a link to the portland neighborhoods. I suggest inner SE or inner NE areas. As for meeting new people, it's kind of random. There are some good bars all over town. I am fond of brewpubs like McMenamin's (lots all over town) Laurelwood, Rock Bottom downtown, Rogue over in the Pearl District. If you are new in town, it might be best to kind of hang with someone from your work for a while to help you get the feel of town. It's tough to meet people totally cold in a new town with no one to help out.

Try SE or NE Portland. The hippest areas are great but tend to have higher rents. You might want to try contacting this group: http://www.reachcdc.org/ It's not easy meeting new people here. You might want to try http://www.meetup.com/find/ Hope this helps.

Gresham is a really good community. Well parts of it, I live in a really good part. It's very close to Portland.
