What is the best aerial tour of the Grand Canyon?

What is the best time of year to travel to the grand canyon? Also is it better to rent a car or book a tour?

  • We are planning to fly in to phoenix or to Mesa and to visit the grand canyon. What would be the best way. We are both in our mid to late 70's, so if driving there is difficult we would like to know. Otherwise we are planning to rent a car in phoenix and drive. Is there a reasonably priced hotel near the Grand Canyon where we can spend the night? (Must have an attached bath and must be clean. Thank you

    I used to work at the Grand Canyon and have hiked many of the trails at different times of the year and October is my favorite time to visit. The nights are cool and the days usually warm up to a nice temperature but doesn't get too warm. The last time I drove I took my kids up through Payson and then Winslow to make a quick stop at Meteor Crater off of I-40 between Winslow and Flagstaff. We got up to the Canyon at night but I wouldn't recommend driving past dusk as we had several near misses with elk crossing the road right in front of us. Check with the Maswick Lodge at the Canyon. It is one of the more reasonably priced places to stay at the Canyon. Also make sure your rental car has a good-sized engine to get you up there. It's rather unpleasant driving up those hills to Flagstaff if the car has a small engine. You can have it floored but people still nearly run up your tailpipe. I hope you have a nice trip.

If you drive you'll have the chance to visit several places besides the Grand Canyon. The road is excellent and well signed. You can go to their web site to see when is the best time to visit it. I have been there a couple of times one in April and other in August, each time the view was different and awesome!! You can stay at Williams (not too far from the Grand Canyon), there are several hotels which are not expensive. One of the cheapest but not less pretty is almost leaving town, you'll find it because it has two train wagons adapted as very comfortable "suites". Their regular rooms are comfortable and have an attached bath. The price includes a modest but delicious breakfast. There are several places you can visit on your trip it all depends on the route you want to take. To book your flight, car rental, hotels, and get extra help planning your trip you might want to check the services of http://www.ytb.com/pcflo43 they always do a good job helping people to plan their trips and they are not expensive at all. Of course it's free to contact them. It is always relieving to have everything set before starting a trip.

I live in Flagstaff which is the closest main town to the Grand Canyon. If I were in your shoes I would book a flight into Phoenix because it is almost always cheaper, if you are concerned about the 2 hr. drive to Flagstaff/Grand Canyon, you can fly into Flagstaff (small planes). Then I would rent a car, but if you are concerned about the driving - there are a few great bus touring companies in town such as Road Runner Shuttles (I believe they are online as well for info). For lodging, I would stay somewhere in Flagstaff because everything at the Canyon is touristy and over priced. Flag has a ton of hotels available of all different price ranges. I would say that the fall time has to be the best time of year, but at this point, it is busy year round. Good luck!
