What is a realistic budget when renting in Phoenix, AZ?
-
I'm from the the east coast, but have been looking at different areas of the country to move to for quite some time and AZ is one of the places I really have my eye on. I was told the east and north phoenix are the better areas, so keeping those areas in mind what would be a good price point for a decent sized 3br home?

Phoenix isn't for everyone. I find that most people either love it or hate it. I've lived quite a few places and I personall love it. Be prepared for VERY hot summers and yes, there are some dangerous areas. Don't buy the hype about the kidnapping rate in Phoenix. The majority of those kidnap victims are illegal immigrants from Mexico who have been kidnapped by the people they pay to bring them into the country. Normal citizens are not being snatched off the streets. You will also find some of the best Mexican food in the country, fabulous weather about 8 months of the year and a very good cost of living. The public schools are hit and miss depending on where you live. We do however have some of the best charter schools in the country and some of the school districts are great (Kyrene for one). As for how much you should reasonable spend, it depends on what part of the valley you choose. A home the size you're looking for is very much in demand. A lot of people who've lost their homes due to foreclosure (and there are a ton) end up renting a lot of the houses that size. I'd stick with areas like Gilbert, South Chandler or East Mesa if you're looking in the East Valley. I'd avoid the areas out west. Up north you're safe in North Phoenix and in Scottsdale. Avoid South Phoenix which is the most dangerous part of town. In the East Valley I'd expect to pay between $1100 and $1500. You'll pay less the further east you go (simply because of travel times). You can probably even find a 4 bedroom house in that range. You'll pay more in Scottsdale and North Phoenix. Hope that helps!!

I moved from Boston to Phoenix a few years ago. I rented a one bedroom apartment in a nice safe area (north Phoenix, where the Loop 101 highway meets the I-17 highway) great area. My rent was $400 for the one bedroom, hopwever my boyfriend and his friends rented a 3 bedroom/3 bathroom home in the same area for $1200. Which, as you know if FAR cheaper than anthing on the East coast. But keep in mind, low cost is not all it's cracked up to be. I ended up absolutely hating Phoenix and moving back to Boston. The people are different, culture, food, scenery. I missed big grassy yards, historic brick buildings, seafood, my family, etc. I personally think Phoenix is a god awful palce to live, the summer is too hot to even do anything, you can't even sit at a pool or lake without frying. The public school systems are awful if you have children, they are ranked like 48 out of 50 down there with Mississippi and Alabama. Crime is ridiculous, even in the nice neighborhoods. It's the number 2 city in the WORLD for kidnappings behind Mexico City. Just some things to consider...I moved without knowing any of this and I'm so happy to be back in Boston.
