Where Is The Phoenix Forum?

Moving to Phoenix Arizona Area....Open Forum!?

  • My husband and I are considering moving to Phoenix AZ area soon..his job maybe transferring him there? Anyone who is living there, plz tell me your opinions...right now, we are living in Nashville, TN So...I'm a southern lady, but Phoenix is somewhere I have always wanted to go. But I need to know: -the job market is -what are the good parts and bad parts of the city -of course I know the weather is hot! -what kind of things are there to do thanks alot....

  • Answer:

There are good parts and bad parts of any city. If you are going to live in the town of Phoenix the rule of thumb is north of Camelback Rd. and east I-17 freeway. But of late Scottsdale has had its share of crime. Depending on what you do for a living, the job market is fair. On an interim basis, there are many temporary agencies to work while finding a permenant job. Things to do-museums, botanical gardens, dinner theaters, Tortilla Flats-take the steamboat up the river. Go to Sedona, Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Tombstone, painted desert, petrified forest.

Stay in Nashville, you don't want to live here. I was born and raised here. I'm moving to Georgia in November. The crime is bad here. Shooting every night, road rage, gangs. If like the crime in LA, CA. then go ahead and move to this city of horror

Stay home or move somewhere else. Because Phoenix is really a suburb of Mexico City there tends to be a Third World mentality about the place. More cars are stolen in Phx than any other US city-so when you get insurance make sure that it has a provision for renting a car in it . The job market is fine providing that you are willing to work for low wages and no benefits. If you noticed the people that extol the virtues of the" city " don't actually live in it. They live in far away suburbs and commute. With the price of gas being what it is that could take a big chunk out of your already measly wage. The boy geniuses who had the vision to build all the brand new highways around their brand new city lacked the vision to leave a right of way down the middle of them for a future rail line.-oops ! Lastly you only think you know about the heat -you really don't.In addition to the obvious stuff , it will also crack your dashboard and windshield and really jack up your utility rates. I always rented apartments with utilities included not so much because I was going to save money but rather because I would then always know what my monthly expense would be. Have fun

I have lived here for 9 years now. At first, I had a hard time. It's a big city but still a bit of a small town attitude. I will say, the summer sucks but all you need to do is go somewhere cool, stay inside or hang out in the pool, ( today the high is 115!!!!) But the monsoon season is setting in and that means rain! You'll find a job....there are tons. The wages are not that bad and the housing market has dropped again. You can still find a home for less than $200,000. Keep in mind, Arizona is the 5th largest city in the US and it sits next to Mexico. Yes there is a large Hispanic population here, but there are tons of every race!! You don't have to live in Phoenix to experience resources...Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, yes, of course Snotsdale....oh I mean, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Tempe and Mesa are all very popular places to live. I have found that the area has so many thing to do community wise all year long. Good luck! And if you need a good church, email me and I'll let you know!

I haven't been to Nashville, but I know that Nashville has an interesting music culture. One of the problems with Phoenix is that, it being so new, it really hasn't had time to develop a culture. It's almost like it's in transition - it got so big, so fast, that it's just sort of ... there, you know? It's improving, but it just doesn't have the culture of Nashville. That said, the job market there is good. People keep pouring into the city. Good parts and bad parts are sort of scattered across the city - again, unfortunately, due to its rapid growth - but both the suburbs of Scottsdale and Tempe are nice, and central and north Phoenix are pleasant, especially north Central Avenue. Also, downtown is rapidly improving, though there's a lot of construction there as a result. In terms of things to do, again, Phoenix has pleasant enough restaurants, museums, bike trails, sports, and parks, but it's all a bit scattered. The desert scene takes some getting used to. Honestly, the really nice things are Arizona itself - the nearness to the mountains, the red rocks of Sedona, Lake Pleasant, the high pines of Flagstaff, and the Grand Canyon. Phoenix is OK, but it's not a city in the classic sense. Not yet, anyway.
