I am currently living in Sacramento, CA and have a job offer in Phoenix, AZ... is Phoenix a smart move?
-
Please help.... Any information will be helpful. I have never been to Phoenix, AZ. I hear the weather is unbearable and I am not a fan of high temperatures. I would prefer the cold. However, I can adjust if it is worth it. Is Phoenix a good place to live? I am a 23 year old single female. What is there to do in Phoenix? How is the weather year round? Is it a boring place or fun place to live? Are the people friendly? What is the average age range? Is it safe? What is the night life like? How far are the lakes and rivers, are they decent? Please... anyone who lives there who can give me any information as to why it would be a good or bad place to live would be very appreciated. I know nothing. Tell me anything you can :) I really want to move out of Sacramento I just do not know if Phoenix is the place for me. I would prefer San Diego or somewhere cooler near a beach but this seems to be a good job offer and I am currently unemployed. Let me know what you think. Thank you so much!!

Answer:
ok so i actually lived there for years so that would make me qualified to answer your question...so many people just answer based on stereotypes and things that they have heard from random people... First off yes it does get hot in phoenix...the record is in the 120's, but it is not in the 120's everyday of the summer... The hottest times of the year is obviously the summer months...june, july and august... Because it is a desert there is not much rain, but there are very beautiful monsoon storms that take place in the monsoon season in mid to late summer. these storms arn't anything to be afraid of, although they do knock out power occasionally, but they do provide rain water and spectacular lightning shows (seriously one of the most beautiful things to watch...from a distance!) The winters can be cold...the coldest month being february...but not unbearable...and there has only been snow recorded one time in phoenix history (because it is so close to sea level)...but there are mountains that surround the city (which is why it is called the "valley of the sun"), which some do get snow...and you can always drive up to payson, prescott or flagstaff to get a snow fix. The fall and spring are beautiful and feel great though... Because of the hot summers most people do things inside...and as you said there is good shopping here...there are about 7 malls throughout the phoenix area and countless shopping centers... In the east valley (like gilbert, mesa and chandler), stores are convenient to get in and out of and are close. As far as things to do...to be honest san diego would have much more to offer but there are things to do...the downtown area is not exactly bustling but there are art museums, a light rail, and a few clubs. There are professional hockey (coyotes), basketball (Suns), Baseball (diamondbacks), and football (cardinals)...all of which are fun to see the games. there are also many venues to see concerts at too. There is also a lake called saguaro that is north east of the valley which is fun and it is right next to a river which is fun to go tubing on. In all cities there are good parts and bad parts...i lived there for years and never felt scared...the east valley is the safest, closer to downtown or some of downtown mesa is a little rougher. I found that the people are laid back and kind...although theres all types where ever you go. The restaurants in phoenix are great too! Most of my favorite restaurants are in phx. and as far as scorpions and stuff...you may see one, but it depends on where you live...if you move to the outskirts to a brand new neighborhood then you will see more, probably won't be a common occurrence though, and if you are more in the city you probably won't find them. The best places to live in phoenix are probably the east valley (again like gilbert, mesa, chandler), everything is newer, but it does tend to be more of a place for families. So to sum things up...phoenix was a great place to live (i actually recently moved to california, and actually miss it sometimes)...it would probably be smart for you to check it out for yourself first before just jumping in...but in this economy a job offer is pretty rare and it is to a good city in my humble opinion. Good luck in whatever you decide!

WOW! I was born in Sacramento, California! Then, I moved to Phoenix, Arizona.. The only time the weather is really bad is in June,July, and August. The lakes are very fun to go to. They just re-built one of the water parks. Mostly everyone is friendly. It's fun to shop here too! (: If you like to camp, there are many good camp sites. Lastly, a lot of people here go hiking all of the time, and there are many beautiful places to go hiking.

I love it here. I know it sux in the summer, but the rest of the year the weather is great. And Scottsdale is a good place to be single in. There are tons of hang outs and tons of singles imo. I met my husband there. Like anywhere, there are good and bad parts of town. Just don't go to s. phoenix at night and your fine. don't go to van buren street unless you want to see hookers. chandler is more family oriented. tempe is college aged. I like scottsdale and no. phoenix personally. If you are churchy, there are lots of those here to meet people. I used to live in SD area and its gorgeous and the weather is great but I was bored. You can only go to the beach so much. And it's overcast and cloudy a lot. And northern AZ is beautiful. Moving here is the best thing I ever did. but you probably should check it out before making a huge decision like that. Come in November.

You got a job offer. Take it, I would. Trust me you do not want the cold. I live in a cold climate and it sucks. Been to Pheonix, it's nice. Not much in the way of beaches, though. There are a few resevoirs, that's it. It's in the middle of a desert.

Hey Deb- What zip code is your new job going to be in? You'll want to live somewhat close to where you work. Edit your question and add the zip. That way we can zero in on a better answer.

Yuck... 115 degree weather is definitely not for me. And the scenery is not so great. No trees, flat land, dryness, etc. There is dust everywhere...
god help you

No It's a horrible idea Phoenix is hotter than hell from May to October. It's a cultural wasteland The traffic is horrible Gangs are serious issue The landscape is mono chromatic dog ugly brown In summer the mountains around the city disappear due to pollution Whatever natural beauty and appeal that Phoenix once had was destroyed when it's population rapidly expanded I lived there for two years and quite honestly I haven't a clue as to why people continue to live there Do yourself a favor and fly in for a couple of days and see what it's like before you make the commitment Here's demographic link http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/04/0455000.html Here's a Phoenix PD crime statistics link http://phoenix.gov/haht-bin/hsrun/payf/CRIMGRIDP/StateId/DalUoToGO2k8Xj1TbE-cK45d3osJw-U_vk/HAHTpage/HS_selectAnalysis

Ive lived in Napa most all my life and have a brother who lives in scaramento for many years. I now live in Phoenix. Phoenix is way better except the temp sucks. Today is 105. I bet its nice in Sacramento today. Summers are just long and very hot. Winters are nice tho. We have some nice lakes here, Lake Pleasant, we have Salt River tubing. 4 hrs to Los Angeles. I miss CA. but not Sacramento. I actually lived at Lake Berryessa many years, now thats way better than Phoenix, lol. Thats not true about the gangs, yes if you live in a bad area, just the same as Sac. Many nice areas to live here, Iam in Gilbert. very prett, lots of trees, no smog. also Flagstaff is an 1hr-2hr drive. Lots of snow skiing!
