Is moving from Phoenix to Philly a good idea?

Nervous About Moving To Phoenix.......?

  • Next October my husband ETS's out of the Army and is wanting to get a job with the border patrol or Phoenix PD. He has a friend who lives there but I know nobody. We'll be 20 somethings with at least a toddler. I was hoping to get some hot tips on moving there. I wanna know about the housing market, good neighborhood to look into, school district information, good churches(southern baptist), you get the idea. What are the pros and cons of phoenix? What are things I need to know when I get there? Any tips for fitting in?

  • Answer:

I have been here for 18 years now and I love it. It does get hot here but the winters are great.

You will find most in AZ love the outdoors. They like hiking camping and their ATVs. Most yet are very pro gun. If you love the outdoors and are Pro Gun you will love AZ. One thing you will see is a few people will feel you out as to how you believe in like the 2nd. Had a couple move next to me in Northern AZ. They come from Pittsburgh The where on the police force. They laugh to this day when we go shooting how I would always remind them this is AZ we love are guns. Today they are on the local Police Dept. I regard them as very good friends

Yeah stay away from PHX live in the East burbs. Gilbert or Tempe. It is hard to meet people as they aren't that friendly. Good luck.

If you can't afford Scottsdale (which most can't) then I'd suggest North Central Phoenix. We live in the Canal North neighborhood near 7th St. and Camelback and it's been great. Don't get too deterred by higher crime rates downtown. Our house has had no problems, but if you go 1 block over people have houses broken into all the time. As far as schools, I wouldn't suggest any public schools in Arizona - They're 49th in the country last time I checked. I'd suggest private schools (there are a lot of Catholic and other religious elemntary schools in the area that are relatively affordable, and Christian high schools along with some Catholic high schools). Plus, in North Central Phoenix you can find a church to fit whatever you would like. North Phoenix Baptist Church is huge, and located at Central and Bethany Home Ave. There are dozens of other churches in the area if that doesn't suit your taste. As far as fitting in, you really don't have to (nor should you want to change yourself). It's a huge city, and people of all walks of life. You'll undoubtedly find people similar to you or that are at least accepting.

Everyone else in the world is moving here also, so you're probably not alone in feeling nervous. Don't live in Phoenix, go for one of the suburbs. The cost of living is high. There is high crime, a cop in Phoenix gets shot almost every day, traffic is horrible, illegals and drop houses everywhere and it's getting so overcrowded. But the weather is pretty nice right now.

Hello Southern girl....I am a fellow southerner who moved out to Gilbert from Atlanta about 5 yrs ago....we lived there for 2 yrs and then had to relocate again. My experience was great, as we were a family with small kids and the community was supportive of this....great parks and rec, community centers and activities. I think Gilbert has grown into this pretty well considering the population growth....Having been in Atlanta when its population exploded and there is no comparision. Gilbert has fared well....but for those who like the slower paced life, might find it not as nice. My mother in law lives there and she moved there when we were there, she doesnt like all the development.....as with it brings more traffic. Your husband will certainly be busy with Phx PD as they do see alot of action...My old neighbor there had a brother who was with the phx PD and he loved it. Gilbert has a great police dept too. Goodyr and peoria are 2 west valley burbs that are growing and might be more affordable, they are certainly family oriented, I think....we have family who lives out there and they like it. Location wise it might be easier for him to commute, if he is going into Phx. Gilbert does have the best schools and has the best family feel. You will be glad to know that alot folks go to church in the Valley and yes there is even some baptist churches around....Mormons are in great number....as are the lutheran churches....we attended Christ Greenfield lutheran in Gilbert...it had a nice feel to it ( I was raised So Baptist) And there is a baptist church called Heritage in Gilbert...they have a good preschool, (so does Christ Greenfield which is where we went and were very happy with it) My sister in law attends a community christian church in Goodyr and has a wonderful supportive church family. She has been there about 4-5 yrs and she loves it, and she has 5 kids. I know I rambled a bit, but I hope I gave you some good info you can use. My mother in law is a realtor too.

The best advice that I can personally give would be to ask my mom about Phoenix. She has lived there for many years and can give valuable and experiential advice about the best places for just about everything. [email protected] -Tell her that "Mick" sent you.. She'll know what you mean. I personally had lived there for just a couple of years and had acclimated to the new environment, as well as all of the new things found in a big city. I liked the place quite well. Please make sure to get Uninsured Motorist coverage as a minimal addition to Liability auto insurance in the Phoenix area..

My advise is to tell your husband to try to get into the Scottsdale PD. There is a lot of things to do in Scottsdale and it is a nicer community to live in. Here is the website for the Scottsdale PD and you can fill out an application online. http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/HR/Jobs/JP7362.asp Here is a link to a great Baptist church my aunt goes to and she loves it there. She has a 5 year old daughter and the church family and friends she has there are great (I've been there a few times and I really like it, they are very inviting. I don't attend it all the time because I live in Mesa). They do a lot of activities for the kids also. http://www.fsbcs.org/ There are a lot of good elementary schools in Scottsdale, here is one that I think is very good, it is in the Scottsdale Unified School District http://cochise.susd.org/ here is a website that has a little info on the housing market. http://www.househuntnews.com/MCR/Arizona/ Chandler and East Mesa are also great places to live if you want to look into those areas. I wouldn't live in Phoenix though. The pros of living in Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe/Mesa/Chandler, is that there are a lot of things to do, like: The lakes, the zoo, the science center, etc. and it's a pretty nice place to live. The cons The traffic and the heat are the 2 biggest cons about living here. I would have to say the traffic is the biggest con, the heat is not so bad, you will get used to it. Don't worry you'll fit in perfectly, there are so many people here from so many different places, you will have no problem making Friends and fitting in.

I have lived here a long time the best advice I can give you is to stay out of old neighborhoods go to new housing area there are lots of young new family's just waiting for you the housing market is down right now so you could probably find a good house that's been on market for awhile for less there is a great church in phoenix Baptist southern i don't know it is large when you get here look in phone book there are many try them if you don't like change Surprise is a nice area Scottsdale Chandler Glendale be care-full of phoenix some areas are icky it is extremely hot in summer not much seasons winter short cold from about late November to January mornings cold now but still 90 to 80degrees you don't need to know anything when you get here there are people from every state here and fitting in be your self join neighborhood things join a church group you'll do fine you may not like it here some don't but try it and see good luck
