What do you think of Yuma, AZ?
-
I would like to get out of the midwest and relocate to the southwest. (Can't stand the cold winters and humid summers here). I know that Tucson and Phoenix would be too big for me. Has anyone here been to, or lived in Yuma? How's the ecomomy, crime rate, cost of living, etc. Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend Yuma unless you love sweltering more months of the year, than not. It along with Lake Havasu, are two of the hottest spots in Arizona. I've been there a couple of times, and it didn't hold any attraction for me. I did enjoy seeing the old prison there tho. And you're really close to the Mexican border. But jobs aren't all that plentiful as I recall. It's more a retirement area for those who can stand extreme heat. I was there with my husband on business otherwise I wouldn't have gone down there. You make your appts' for morning and forget about working in the afternoons. Staying under the A/C during that time. Phoenix is also a sweat bath during the monsoon weather. It can come early in the summer or it can wait as long as August. But it is absolutely miserable after May. There are increased swimming pools, irrigation canals, and sprinkling systems galore that all contribute to the humidity that is now commonplace. It's no longer a 'dry heat' as they still adver- tise to draw people. From what people have told me, New Mexico is far more temporate for heat, than Arizona. You have higher altitude and it is a bit cooler. I've talked to people who lived there, who were temporarily working on a job assignment in Phoenix and the men said they loved it in New Mexico, and hated the heat of Phoenix, and were in a hurry to get back. I have heard Colorado has some very warm summers, but they have snow during the winter at their ski resorts. But I don't know if that is statewide or not. Vegas is also a hot box during the summer, but I don't know about the humidity due to the swimming pools there. I would think it's still cooler than the Phoenix area, since there isn't as much vegitation. But it's a fast growing city, so it won't be too long before it will look more like a metropolis than a desert town. If I had to pick a town in Arizona for what I'd think a more perfect climate, then I'd choose the small town of Prescott north of Phoenix. It could pass for any town in the US. It has lots of tall trees and a nice breeze on warm days and nearby lakes and lots of other sites to visit. With the red rock country of Sedona to the north which is beautiful. If you are more flexible in your job hunting, that could be your haven you're seeking. I would have loved living there and said so many times. It has so much appeal, in addition to its' history. It just seems to look like 'home', no matter where you're from.

Even though they are building new stuff in Yuma, I don't recommend it. There are plenty of other places in AZ that fit your requirements.

Yuma gets humid in the summer time it is right on the river. It is about 10 degrees hotter than Phoenix. Nothing really to do there.

Nothing going for Yuma. Check out Prescott or Flagstaff north of Phoenix or Santa Fe and other small northern New Mexico towns. Forget Albuquerque. It's too violent.

boring as hell and probably the hottest place in AZ after Lake Havasu. If you want a smaller place to live, look south of Tuscon (like Sahuarita or Green Valley) or north of Phoenix (maybe Prescott or Parker).
