What is the cost of living in Pennsylvania?

Eastern Pennsylvania Relocation? Best Schools? Safest City? Lowest cost of living? Asian People?

  • I need a li'l help here. I'm from Phoenix and considering to relocate to EASTERN Pennsylvania for a job offer (Respiratory Therapy). I'd like to hear good input abt. LIFE in Eastern PA. Any homes ranging around $250k? I'm picky abt schools (son comes from an excelling school in Gilbert Public Schools here and won't settle for less). Any activities for an 8yo boy? What abt the rudeness/courtesy of people from this area? I am pure Asian but am very much westernized and so is my family and would LOVE to have friends from all races. Best county to live in and safest? Totally clueless about this. And I know Jon and Kate plus 8 lives in PA too and they seem to be in a nice neighborhood with domesticated people around, that would be ideal ... Well, I would love all your opinions abt. this. I am just a bit concerned abt. how our family would blend in the eastern PA setting since we're pure Asians and trust me, I know Racial Discrimination. Had my fair share of that. THANKS A LOT!

  • Answer:

John and Kate live in Lancaster County. It used to be nice but folks like them are creating an ever-growing demand for cookie-cutter housing developments which are eating up some of the most fertile farmland in the country. My family and I used to make frequent trips out there because it was so beautiful; now it's heartbreaking. I live in Philadelphia, which has a large Asian population but you wouldn't want your child to mix with the public school students here. (My husband is an A.P. at one after teaching in Philly for 10 years.) Right outside my part of the city is an area called Upper Darby. It has a very large Asian population and an EXCELLENT, award-winning school district. You could probably get a decent-sized house for that much, maybe a little small, in the town of Drexel Hill. It is a beautiful town and is in the UD school district.Good luck. I hope you're happy wherever you land.

Ha...I don't think you have to worry too much. There are definitely some small minded people out there, but it's not bad around here. If it means a lot to you though, Cherry Hill and Voorhees, New Jersey both have large Asian populations. Both areas have great schools and nice homes. I'd stay out of Voorhees if you're looking to stay in that price range, but Cherry Hill is much larger, and homes can be found for cheap, while still being part of the Cherry Hill School System. I would also recommend Haddon Township, NJ. There are a lot of pricier parts of it, but pockets of affordability. Haddon Township schools are some of the best in the country. Delaware is also cheap, but if you're going to go that route, definitely do your homework on the schools...I've never heard anything good about them.

Here's a cost of living calculator comparing the cost of living in Phoenix, Arizona with that in Lancaster, Pennsylvania: http://www.payscale.com/cost-of-living-calculator/Pennsylvania-Lancaster/- Overall, the cost of living in Lancaster is 6% higher than in Phoenix, and the cost of living is 15% higher. You can use this calculator to look up the cost of living in other Pennsylvania cities, as well as find median salary data for a Respiratory Therapist (if you need that info). Looking at both salary and cost of living will give you a better idea of how your standard of living will be affected if you decide to move. Hope that helps, Assistant to Dr. Salary
