Where is a good temporary place to live in Philadelphia?

Is Philadelphia a good place to live?

  • I live in central California and i'm looking for a place to move after I graduate from medical assisting. After I want to go to school for nursing. I'm single, no children and no ties, so i'm basicly free to do what I want. What are the pros and cons to living in the city of brotherly love. What are the best places or neighborhoods to live in? What are some good schools? What are some fun things to do? I heard philly is a great place to meet people, is this true? How is the weather? And anything else you can think of, Thanks!

For schools, you can't go wrong with Philly...there's Temple U., U. of Penn and Drexel U., all of whom are associated with a major hospital in the city as well as places like Villanova U. outside of the city limits. In terms of a place t live, it'll all depend on what you can spend...real estate is a lot cheaper here than it is in Cali though, so you should be fine. I'd be prepared to spend $1,000 a month on a one bedroom place though to start with. Drexel and Penn are both in University City, which--as you can tell by the name--is the college part of town. That's not to say that ever house is inhabited by 20-something drunks or bookworms, but there'll be a lot more there. Temple is near an area called Fairmount, or the Art Museum area. Depending on where you are in that area, it's a great part of the city. Temple is pretty close, but is in a rougher neighborhood than the rest of the schools. You'll find that you could be in a great location, but only blocks away from where you wouldn't want to be at night in many parts of the city. The city, for the most part, is a good place with good people. It can be very blue collar at times and in some parts of the city (think South Philly and North East Philadelphia), and then very eclectic in others (think Northern Liberties and Fishtown). Try this... www.phillyblog.com It's a blog organized by neighborhoods. You'll be able to ask the residents from just about any area in and around Philly about their honest opinion. It's a lot more focused than a website like this.

I live outside of Philly, so I cannot answer to best places in the city, but I think there are better places to live. I find a lot of people to be very mean in Philly, brotherly love is not how many describe Philly anymore. There are nice places there, but if you like a city, I would rather live in NY or Chicago.
