Interesting, strange, hip, places to visit in Philadelphia?
-
Recently had a quick ½ hour stop in Philadelphia and thought it seemed like a cool city. I live in NY and would like to spend a few days in Philadelphia exploring. Any ideas on off the beaten path places I should see or things I should do? I’m also a vegetarian, so any recommendations on places to eat would be great also.

South street is definitely interesting, especially at night. You wont see too many tourists, mostly locals. Some cool boutiques, wierd stores, restaurants, etc. They have a tour where they take you to see famous movie spots in Philly. Its not very known. Some people go to see Rocky scenes on there own, but be careful if you go to Kensington bc its not a good area. You can do a Philly ghost tour at night. They take you to 'haunted' historic places & graveyards from hundreds of years ago, even one where Benjamin Franklin is buried. Might also include the eastern state penitentary. There is also a Mural arts tour. They take you to see some of philly's bets examples of wall murals & graffitti. You can go to the Italian Market in South Philly(also in Rocky, so there will be tourists) but you will find tables of fresh fruits & veggies. You can also try the Reading terminal market in center city or check out Chinatown. You can go to the U of Penn museum of archeology & anthropology or the Mummer's Museum(completely Philadelphian) or the Mutter museum. Bartram's Garden is the oldest Botanical garden in the US & a nice peaceful site. Battleship NJ is right across the river in Camden. You can take the ferry over. Also Festival Pier at Penns Landing always has some type of festival, concert or activity going on. Off the beaten path? Mutter Museum (A collection of medical oddities) http://www.collphyphil.org/mutter.asp Eastern State Penitentiary (The world's first; reportedly haunted; Al Capone did a stint there) http://www.easternstate.org/ Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial (The nation's smallest National Park) http://www.nps.gov/thko/ The Rodin Museum (very small, features his most iconic sculpture, The Thinker) http://www.rodinmuseum.org/ Just some odd ball places. I can't recommendation any cheesesteaks places for obvious reasons.

There's a lot to do in philly between the theaters and museums and historical sights. Penn's Landing is great. You can take the ferry over to Camden, NJ and visit the Battleship NJ or the aquarium. South street is interesting, but it's not hopping until night. Eastern State Penn (they have their own website - google them) have a lot of tours. There are horse drawn carriage rides, the Ride the duck tour (a car that is driven into the Delaware river - it's amphibious). There's the Awbury Arbortium (sp?) in Germantown. Bartram Gardens. Longwood Gardens. There's the Edgar Allen Poe house - and he's weird all by himself. There's an Insect Museum, the Mummers Museum. The first national bank of the US, the 2nd national bank of the US, the US treasury ( no samples, though. :-( ) I also like the traditional thnings. The Art Museum (where Rocky ran up the steps) but the museum itself is HUGE! The Franklin Institute has a lot of interesting things. There's a lot of parks: Love Park, Fairmount Park, Logan Park. There's all kinds of places to eat and I'm sure you'll be able to find vege dishes just about everywhere.

South Street and Penn's Landing is cool. The Betsy Ross house and Ben Franklin's Grave. The Franklin Institute has a bunch of weird exhibits and hands-on things to see and do. You should Ride The Ducks Tour. http://www.phillyducks.com/ It's so cool. You drive around the whole city and the tour guide tells you everything about the city, and then the bus turns into a boat and drives right into the Schuylkill River. It's awesome. You also get a quacker. You blow into it. And it quacks like a duck. It sounds crazy, but it's really fun.
