What are the different sections of Philadelphia?

I need somebody from Philadelphia to answer this...?

  • I am writing a book that takes place in Philadelphia. Can somebody tell me which side of the city or which area is rich, which side is poor, names of neighborhoods, sections of the city that have night clubs, etc. Are there any places in the city that are kind of run down or have deserted businesses except a few? would be great. I have been to Philadelphia once and loved it which is why my book is set there but I don't know much about the different places in Philly. Any websites would be helpfull

  • Answer:

Rich area in the city would be Rittenhouse Square. If you want really rich, you need to do suburbs. Main Line suburbs like Gladwyne, Haverford, Bryn Mawr. Poor areas would be North Philly and West Philly. Clubs would be on Delaware Ave. But you might find that most Philadelphians simply do bars, and in that case Old City or South Street. And it is a very compact, high density city, so there would be no deserted areas.

Philly is a city of neighborhoods.and there are SO many: Rich: Chestnut Hill, Society Hill, Rittenhouse Square, Queens Village Poor: North Philly, West Philly Nightclubs: big club scene on Delaware Ave (anyone who says Columbus BLVD known nothing about philly), but most like small local pubs/bars in their own neighborhood. Not a lot of run down areas but worst (in my opinion) K& A (Kensington and Allegheny aves) SouthWest &Mantua in West Philly, other info: originally very Italian area: South Philly Very Irish/Polish: Fishtown Most folks who grew up in Philly refer to their neighborhood VERY specifically sometime by their church parish or their High School I grew up in South Philly in the Irish/Polish area called Pennsport near Queens Village. if asked i'd say I was from Sacred Heart whereas someone a few blocks down would say Mt Carmel. Good Luck with your research....

Night clubs = Delaware ave poor = south philly rich = north philly much info you can grab by reading wiki articles, dig but it will be worth your time to put as much accurate info into your writing will pay off.

This should be perfect. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Philadelphia_neighborhoods Rich: not many, About the whole Center city. Rittenhouse Square, Old City, Society Hill, Northern Liberties can be expensive. These are expensive areas, but these areas have small row homes. Northeast philadelphia can be expensive. Mostly the mid and far northeast, where there are larger homes in areas of it. Poor areas: The whole north Philly, and parts of west Philly. Not including Northwest Philly, which is mostly middle class. Most of Southwest Philly, and parts of South philly. All of Kensington, Allegheny, Fishtown, Tioga. Rundown areas: all of Kensington, Allegheny, Tioga. The houses are old, cheap, and tilting to one side. All of north Philly for that matter. Which includes all of the above rundown areas. Ride the el starting from 69th street to frankford, and look out the window. It's bad. Especially when you get to Kensington. Almost all of Southwest Philly, and most of west Philly. Highest crime areas: North Philly, and Southwest Philly. North Philly has got to be the worst. Best food: South Philadelphis is known for it! And most of the city knows the restaurants Geno's and Pat's. People argue over which makes the best cheesesteak. Very Italian, with a lot of Italian restaurants, and Italians do make some of the best foods. Transportation: All of the average buses and trolleys are Septa. Also the el (elevated train) and the subway. Heres Philadelphia in General http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia Good luck on your book.
