Here are a few ideas for Friday or the weekend, during the day. Take the train into town and get off at Market East. Head right into the Reading Terminal Market, always fun to walk around. Go back toward Market and stop at the Convention Center, right across from the Terminal Market, where they will have a semi-big toy train layout set up and running. http://www.gophila.com/C/Things_to_Do/211/Top_10_Lists/663/Top_10_Things_to_Do_in_November/684/U/Reading_Terminal_Holiday_Railroad_and_Train_Display/1427.html While in that neighborhood, walk up to the Dilworth Plaza on the west side of City Hall and see the Christmas Village, then cross the street and go to Macy's (the Wanamaker Building) and take part in an old Philly Holiday tradition by watching the light show and listening to the huge pipe organ. http://www.philachristmas.com/28-0-About.html http://www.gophila.com/C/Things_to_Do/211/The_Holidays_in_Philadelphia/497/Performing_Arts/500/U/Holiday_Light_Show_at_Macys_Center_City/1430.html From there. stroll over to the Comcast Center (17th and JFK) - their normal amazing lobby show will be put aside for the holidays and a Christmas themed show will be presented. If it is as good as their normal show, it will be awesome. This should be a new Philly tradition's first year. http://www.gophila.com/C/Things_to_Do/211/The_Holidays_in_Philadelphia/497/Holiday_Lighting_Displays/643/U/The_Comcast_Holiday_Spectacular/3066.html Walk back down toward Chestnut Street, and shop the stores at Liberty Place and up and down Chestnut and Walnut. Especially in this area, you will be able to find plenty of shops for anything, plus anything you would like to eat. Catch the train home from the Suburban Station, accessible from almost any building between City Hall and 18th Street, along Market or JFK. Edited to update and add links.
