What are the differences between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia?

Why Does Pittsburgh Feel Like A "Hick Town" Compared To Philadelphia?

  • I have spent time in Pittsburgh on business as well as Philadelphia and I have to say that the two cities are worlds apart. Philadelphia is much better for doing business and the accessibility to the New York, New Jersey market is a big plus. Pittsburgh feels like it's stuck in the 1960's, 1970's. As a result I have put one of my companies in Philadelphia and not Pittsburgh.

  • Answer:

Pittsburgh as a city that evolved from the steel industry. Philadelphia evolved from a land grant given to William Penn, a couple of hundred years before Pitt. Pittsburgh has relatively little history; Philadelphia reeks in history. The closest markets in Pitts are located in Ohio. Phila has, as you mention, NY, NJ, plus MD, DE, and the whole east coast plus Canada. Transportation is better. Philadelphia was the site (amongst others) where the Declaration of Independence was written. People in Phila are still skeptical. People in Pitt (okay, I'm going out on a limb here) don't want to rock the boat. And finally any area that started out with major sea and land connections, had the greatest advantage.OK, this post is too long. Philadelphia was a good choice.
